Small Game Hunting in SWVA

Howdy Y'all,
Brand spankin' new to the forums and thought I could ask a general question here. Does anyone have good info on hunting small game (squirrels and what not) down in Southwest Virginia? I go to college near the Abingdon area, and I'm interested in hunting around some of the parks. I also need to find a way to get in touch with local land owners. Any tips/suggestions?
