This is why you don't store your gun where you cook your vittles

Man shot after loaded gun in stove explodes
By Kristi E. Swartz
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Antoine Boutte used to keep a loaded gun at the bottom of his gas stove.
That is, until he forgot it was there early Saturday and he and another man decided to cook some food, Fulton County police said
Boutte fired up the stove at his College Park home around 3:30 a.m Saturday -- heating up the .40 caliber Smith & Wesson along with it, a police report said.
While the food was cooking, the weapon’s magazine started to melt in the gun well, the police report said.
This caused the spring – and bullets – to come out of the magazine.
The bullets started going off like popcorn.
Boutte’s friend, Christopher Henderson, opened the stove “to see what was happening,” the police report said.
That’s when part of a bullet casing flew out of the stove, hitting Henderson in the stomach, police said.
Boutte and another friend, Lisa Wells, took Henderson to Southern Regional Hospital. He was treated for his injuries, which police said were non life-threatening.

This gives new meaning to the Term "Cooked off round".
So the rounds that were in the magazine started going off like popcorn, what happened to the one that was in the chamber? Did it go out the back side of the oven?

Hipoint, eh? I guess that answers grumpyMSGs question about the round in the chamber...it melted the barrel before setting off the ammo!

If you look at how it is described, I don't even think the magazine was in the gun.

No that is the new Taurus Protector Polymer. Have you seen that thing? Talk about being overly concerned with weight.

This gun is ultra light! It is the highest evolution of the single shot revolver ever made...and when we say single shot, we mean it!

So he wasn't shot and the gun didn't explode?

So he wasn't shot and the gun didn't explode?
The mag melted the the rounds went flying. Then shot off on hitting his friend when they open the oven.

The gun was stored under to oven. The mag was in the magazine well, but as the plastic melted, the rounds were pushed out somehow. Possibly the mag floor plate gave way and an exploding round pushed the rest out or the mag catch gave way, etc. In any case, the rounds were loose and started to cook off. It does not sound like he had a round in the chamber. Smokeless powder burns, it doesn't explode. When it is confined to a small space, like a barrel, it burns violently and propels our bullets down range. When not confined, it burns at a much slower rate so the rounds just "popped." The bullets would be pushed out of the case and could harm you, but would be travelling very slow. The biggest danger is from the brass case shrapnel which is what hit his friend.

Terminology! (pet peeve)
"This caused the spring – and bullets – to come out of the magazine.
The bullets started going off like popcorn."
Cartridges, not bullets.
"Boutte’s friend, Christopher Henderson, opened the stove “to see what was happening,” the police report said. That’s when part of a bullet casing flew out of the stove, hitting Henderson in the stomach, police said.
I don't think that getting hit in the stomach with part of a casing equates to being shot as the titles alleges. Sounds like he just got fragged.
At least the writer said magazine and not clip.

Yeah, I read the article. I read another article (late '80's) stating that loose ammo exposed to fire would be turned away by firefighters wear (pre-Kevlar).

But that title wouldn't be fun would it!

The evil DK says "why were the wounds not life threatening" and the good DK says "Christopher, when you heard them boolits popping you shouldn'ta looked in the stove..."
I have to ask - not that I have led a sheltered life or anything - but are there truly people in the world this stupid? I can only say yes and answer my own question because you obviously cant make this stuff up...well, maybe I could...

Well, it was a gas oven. If he was familiar only with electric ovens that use that drawer for storage and the broiling is done in the same area as the regular baking, that might help explain his slight oversight.
