There's "we", and then there's "we". Many people with some interest in firearms can see enough trees to figure out there's a forest of some kind (by no means all, sadly).

Everyone else ... let's just say my low opinion of human nature is constantly being recalibrated lower by reality.

All they care about are votes and most of the votes for jerks like this come from those less intelligent voters. The dumb ones as you put it. They no doubt rely on the bell curve for intelligence which shows that approximately half the population are of average intelligence or less. So 50% of voters have an IQ of around 110 or below. That in itself is scary. They scarf up some on the other side (>110) by implementing programs that appeal to them. Add illegals who will vote left and presto you've won the election...

The real problem is that more than half of the elected representatives I have exposure to via TV, radio, etc seem to be twits, jerks,and morons. Its a rare thing to see one of them speaking intelligently about a political issue.
