Moorish Science Temple Squatters?

New article
In Newport News a group of guys from the
Moorish Science Temple of America posted a notice in the local paper that they were taking posession of a property & promptly moved in. Problem was, it wasn't theirs. No longer do they possess the crates of firearms, ammo, chemicals, fake IDs & uniforms found on the property!
The inside info come from a post on ARFCOM. Any VGOF representation from NN hear about this?

This is actually legal until the owner claims they are trespassing. Last time I checked in Virginia you had to be in possession (squat) of the property for 20 years and then you could file for a deed. As the article states, vacant homes are the target.

It's rather scary, not too far from where I live.

Not to far from me, and my street alone has 6 homes for sale that are vacant. Keep a close eye out anyway, but will be a little more vigilant. Never heard a thing about it.

Wait a minute. I'm not up on "squatters rights" but.......is it really legal for someone to come into a home, take up living in it even though it's on the market for sale? I'ld think that would be called trespassing. It must be owned by someone and that someone needs to be contacted. I haven't got a mental picture of the exact area but if it's going on in my back yard , or anyones for that matter, something needs to be done. Pronto!

VA law concerning housing is strange. I dont know about squatters but have had experience with something close. I bought our house and closed last September. About a month before closing my realtor called me and said the current owners wanted me to do a lease back...me buy the house and then lease to them. I said no. The house was a short sale and they did not want to leave. Push come to shove and they announced they were not leaving. I was bound by contract to close and we really wanted this house. I talked to an attorney and he told me that VA law says in such a situation...when you buy a house and the occupants refuse to leave they become at a tennant at the "sufferance" (that word is actually in the law) of the owner. At that point the occupants are protected under renter laws which arent good for the owner if they refuse to leave. I made it clear that I would immediately after closing file suit and make it very difficult for them...knowing it would not be easy and it would be very expensive. To make this somewhat long story shorter they found another place to live and on closing day left and surrendered the keys. Luckily they didnt leave too much of a mess. I found out at closing that they also owned another house in MD just a few short miles away. It was quite frustrating.
So I can only imagine that squatters have some sort of loophole protection.

I believe it is if the property has been abandoned. These guys are doing it to houses for sale, big difference.

Yes he is. These jerks are clearly wrong and are in violation of the law. The laws that allow for abandoned property to be claimed exist to settle things when it isn't clear who actually owned it or in some cases, if anyone ever did.
They are can not be used as an excuse to steal property.

I did a little research on the whold squatters rights thing. It seems in VA that open possesion of the property for 15 years and
"Color of Title" (which means having a reason to believe it belongs to you) and you can file for a deed.
Here's a link for more info if anyone is intrested.
http://law.jrank.org/pages/11865/Advers ... ssion.html
Its sort of the same law which covers encroachment of property lines.

"The City of Hampton, VA is dealing with an issue that dates back to the Wild Wild West – squatters.

Urgent Warning!
There has been a recent incident where an organization using the name the Moorish Science Temple of America has illegally entered a home listed for sale, changed the locks and taken over the premises. The incident is under investigation by the Hampton VA Police Department and they have reason to believe that other properties may have been compromised."
Then this is clearly breaking and entering. Trespassing, etc.

Why such a fuss, with no mention of anchor babies? Same result, people come here illegally and pregnant and set up home here in property they dont own(US SOIL) and have a baby....and presto they are all new citizens....

"Conway Shield, legal advisor for the Kecoughtan Company, characterizes the dispute as "a bizarre incident." Sheik Dr. P. Vernon Crowell-Bey, speaking for the Moorish Science Temple of America, says the religious group has owned the property since 1928 and would like the U.S. National Guard to intervene on his group's behalf."

we will see more of this crap as long as we tolerate our "guests" according to their laws. Islamic communities will get their sharia laws that will supercede our constitution, after all , our constitution was written by white slave owners and how fair could that be?
This country is in for a real eye opener once these mutts get their way. We are going to hell with our eyes wide open.
