Roseville police are asking for the public's help in recovering the service weapon that a federal agent forgot in a supermarket restroom.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent removed his weapon -- a Sig Sauer .40-caliber handgun -- while using the restroom of a Bel Air supermarket near Foothills Boulevard and Baseline Road, a Roseville Police Department spokeswoman said, but he forgot to take the gun with him when he left.

By the time he realized his mistake about 15 minutes later, the high-powered handgun was gone, police spokeswoman Dee Dee Gunther said.

Virginia Tice, an ICE spokeswoman, described the Sacramento-based agent as a veteran in the agency. She said he remains on duty as an internal investigation progresses. He was not on duty at the time of the incident, she said.

The German-made Sig Sauer .40-caliber is used by law enforcement agencies and military units worldwide.

The handgun was left at about 7:50 p.m. June 3. After trying more discreet measures to find the person who took the gun, Roseville police turned to the media Tuesday.

Police say they suspect that a man shown in a security photograph picked up the weapon. Security footage showed him entering the restroom with his arms swinging, but leaving with his arms around his waistband.

The man in the photo is in his late teens or 20s and has short hair.
He was wearing wire-framed glasses, a red T-shirt with a spiral design, dark-colored basketball shorts and white athletic shoes.

Gunther said anyone finding valuable property has a legal responsibility to try to find the rightful owner. Based on the value of the semi-automatic handgun, the person taking it could be found guilty of a felony.

Gunther said she gave the agent credit for not trying to hide his mistake.

"He reported it immediately," she said. "His biggest concern is to find that weapon and get it off the streets."

I once worked with a female Deputy Sheriff who put her whole gun belt in the sink, in a public restroom in the courthouse. She then went and camped out in a bathroom stall and had no idea that a court clerk removed her gunbelt from the bathroom and brought it to our Sergeant......

hillarious! and scary!

oh wait, then there's the local police Captain that hung his Glock on the bathroom door coat hook and fired a round into the ceiling, injuring a secretary on the floor above.

Just goes to show that guns and bathrooms don't mix!

Certain areas of the country have federal agents who lose their guns at much higher rates than others...the belief is that they sell them. I was told this from a federal agent. No way to prove it though.

This is what happens when it's just another piece of issued gear. It's not theirs, they didn't pay for it and probably don't even like using it the once or twice a year they have to qualify with it.

It also helps breed irresponsibility when they know they'll maybe get a slap on the wrist and maybe a bill.

^ +1 :hysterical: ^

some years ago, after shooting skeet, I lost a shotgun for a couple of days once and it was a sick sick feeling, as you know that you are directly resposible for something completely that is quite able to cause serious harm, and is totally out of your control...I slept for 2 days when i got it back as it had made me so mentally exhusted...

Got to give good props for the agent for owning up pronto...a lesser man would have lied through his teeth to try to save his own ass ...

that kid with the wired frame galsses is about to learn a tough lesson...
