Anyone hunt the WMA's?

Does anyone here hunt the Wildlife Management Areas? Both the Ragged Island and Chicahominy are pretty close so I'd like to know about them. The Chic is a lot larger and about an hours drive but I'd do it if it were worthwhile. Anyone here that can give me any info on them?

Tried the one down on the way to Fredericksburg off Rt 17 once-- Supposed to be some Dove hunting-- No luck and no birds, until I was getting back in the truck a few hours later. :(

I plan on trying one really close to my home in Chesapeake.

It's called the Cavalier WMA, almost backs up to the great dismal swamp. Apparently some of the biggest black bear in the 757 have been taken there. Apparently there's a field there they designate for dove too.

As far as I know there's no waiting list either, just a prick game warden that I've had a run in or two with.

Hey catfssh, I've been to the great dismal swamp, not hunting just looking around, what do you have to do to hunt that area. Do you need a permit or can you just show up there.

What is the 757 I never heard of it.

I don't dove hunt, I'm just thinking about bear, can you use a rifle or is it shotgun only.

That's cool, it's a really pretty place.
By 757 I meant the area code chesapeake suffolk va beach all that

Here's a link to the area and there's a link for rules.

It's great, that WMA is walking distance from my buddy's house. I've been there a few times to check it out and drive around some, definitely plenty of space.

Thanks for the link.

I got a laugh out of the 757, I wasn't thinking area codes, I thought what the heck is that.

I'm out of here past my bed time, you have a good one.

You guys that are near False Cape State Park might want to check THIS out, deer and feral hogs. Actually, as I read over it I found that black bear in the Dismal Swamp is listed on this page also. Looks like it's a quota hunt.

I didn't see the Cavalier WMA listed on the quota hunt page, and I don't think it's technically part of the Dismal Swamp Wildlife Refuge so it might be an area open to all hunters.

Hunting feral hogs would be so fun though, they're insane. :machinegun:

Watch out for the swine flu - I hear those feral hogs hang out in bad company! :hysterical:

Don't let CNN get hold of this post - they'll start freaking out about the "Feral Hog Swine Flu Pandemic"

ha that's all we need right now.

Has anyone tried hunting the radford armory wma?

I go to Radford University so it's ~10 minutes away from my apartment. I've heard some monster bucks get taken in it, but there's also a decent sized waiting list.

It's no longer Swine Flu, remember? See the second post in THIS thread . Have to come up with a better name before feral cats are offended.

re: cavalier wma

finally got picked for the oct.10-12 deer quota hunt. scouted out looked beautiful. show up monday to hunt, there must have been 20 trucks and suvs parked in the woods. since no "zones" are given out, its every hunter for themselves. finally find an exclusive spot, where no one else was parked, get set up, and within 20 mins, here comes a truck down the road. i dont know how many names are drawn for each hunt date, but for a 4000 acre property, there were way too many people. i must have had 20 trucks drive past me durring my hunt, two of wich parked next to my truck and walked in the woods right in front of me. no consideration for other hunters, and aside from all that, i heard 0 shots in 3days of hunting. i was not impressed and will not be entering this lottery next year.

ps: the only "wall hanger" i saw here were the mosquitoes

Wow! I can't believe this thread is still around. But squirrel hunting this time of year is really tough with all of the leaves still on the trees. When I did hunt tree rats I liked to wait until a little later in the season after some of the leaves were off the trees. But I sure miss hunting them.

I work at the power station and have been thinking about trying the Carlisle Tact of Hogs Island WMA. With all the deer that are constantly getting hit on rt. 650, I figured theres gotta be some back there. Have you ever tried there before?
