I know...I know...But everyone else has one...

Post by BluemontGlock »

I have stated here on more than one occasion that the AK and its variants are not specifically my "cup o tea"...as to me it has been the weapon of the enemy and such ... not real familier with the 7.62 x 39 round...and have enjoyed shooting the .223 AR platform, but it doesn't have enough UMHPH for me (plus the 223 was designed to wound, which makes sense in some applications, but thankfully none that i will be involved with)) and really have wanted an AR in .308...well those are about $1500 for what i want... that is a issue... So this person i know says, have you shot an AK/SKS variant?...maybe a clip or 2... well, he needed to sell his to make an insurance payment and was going to trade it in for next to nothing a the local gun shop that has a rack of them already...and i said "hey, i will give you a bit more than that" ...and he says it 'll come with 500 rounds of 7.62, a plastic stock with cheek piece and a 3 x 9 MIL-DOT...i went right down to the ATM and came home with this.... :bigthumb: :lovegunporn:

Immeadiatly went out and got some winchester white box 7.62 as opposed to the wolf that came with it and am excited that i have jumped into the BBBRB (BIG BORE BATTLE RIFLE BROTHERHOOD) :ar:

Can't wait to get it out to the range and then bring it into Bills for some trigger pulling fun...

-AND- it fits right nicley into my new (to me) Treadlock gun safe (I did not know this, but they are made in Roanoake, BUY VA!) that i picked up over the weekend for a song, 2 beers, and a half a pack of smokes... (never mind the bruises on my legs from carrying the safe  ) BRING ON THE ZOMBIES, COMMUNIST DEER, MUARAUDING GROUNDHOGS, and UNRULY BEARS.... got me a little something to deal with them issues... :enlighten:

I had a great gunners weekend...

Good Deal!! Nice looking rifle.

Now, about the Wolf ammo. Shoot that stuff up! I will guarantee you that thing will eat up the russian ammo! That's all I shoot out of my SKS. I've heard to much stuff about remington/winchester ammo not shooting well out of the AK's/SKS's. I use Wolf and Brown Bear FMJ and not once have I had an issue. It eats it up and begs for more!

Thanks all...I am pretty execited!

Unknown, Tag, Rokor,...if there are some "must do's " to this rifle, pleae do not spare the advice...i am (borderline) whooly ignorant of the SKS... i do know where the trigger is...and with a bright light and road map, a road flare and 2 granola bars, and 30 mins , i figured out how to lock the bolt open...progress is...

and it makes perfect sense that wolf and bear ammo would work well, as they most likely don't get to much winchester ammo over there... what is that "glaze" that they put on thier rounds? can it do anything but glump up under heat and settle into the cracks and crevices? or is that by design?

Must Do's? Shoot it a lot!! LOL.

I am no expert on the SKS, but I researched it a lot when I got it. I have some links at home (at work right now) that I will post later that has a lot of good info. One of the links is an SKS forums, maybe if you google it, you can find it before I get home this evening. The other link is just some guys personal site that is loaded with all kinds of SKS info.

As far as the glaze on the ammo, I was concerned about that too when I first got some, so I went to the Wolf Ammo website and this is what it said:
Polymer coating ensures smooth feeding and extraction
All I know, is my sks loves the stuff, lol.

http://www.yooperj.com/ Just click the SKS link on the left of the page and scroll down to see all the links to the individual pages.

another good one with videos and downloadable step by step cleaning instructions, break down, etc...

No problem at all. I knew what an SKS was, but knew nothing really about them when I got mine. So I searched and searched and found a lot of stuff, but those 3 that I gave you were the best.

Oh yeah, on the surplus rifle link, all the videos and downloadable stuff will be on the right hand side in the SKS links. Once you click one link, there will be even more links on the right. There is a lot of stuff there, you just have to go through it all.

The advice I can give you is to read up on it and try to figure out whatcha got and what it likes to eat. Wolf ammo and Brown Bear will be fine just make sure to clean properly after shooting the corrosive stuff. And get yourself a bayonet or a bipod those empty lugs can be an eyesore. Check places like sksman.com or Tapco for fun new stuff to bolt on to it, but don't go overboard.
