Hey there. I'm expecting my M1 Garand from CMP sometime in the next few weeks. i'm kind of new to firearms, and I want to ensure that it is safe to fire once I get it. can someone refer me to a reliable gunsmith who can check out my rifle and not charge me an arm and a leg to do it?(I am in the Portsmouth area). Thanks a bunch.
Geoff

FWIW all Garands from the CMP are inspected and test fired for function before sale.

I've had CMP guns that failed subsequent inspection and had to be sent back. Others have as well. They deal in a very high volume with a limited number of employees, a lot slips through the cracks.

What/why did they fail? I've had three and none had any issues at all. Are we talking condition not as stated or were they unsafe to fire. I'm not flaming you just asking for clarification of what they CMP missed?

Off the top of my head there was a bad gas cylinder and an oversize firing pin hole. CMP seemed to think it merited replacement of the rifle. There were also various worn small parts, and every one has needed a new recoil spring - regular surplus rifle wear.
They also sent me one of their not a service grade service grades - original metal with a new set of wood. The wood was cut too tight and had to be opened up in order for the op rod to move.
