Green Top Sporting Goods
I've heard a lot of good things about Green Top Sporting Goods in Richmond. Have any of you been there? Maybe we should make this part of our Field Trip if we're going to be at Bass Pro on I-95 anyway Jason.

I use to live about 10 miles from Greentop. They have just about anything when it comes to guns and reloading, but I have found that DeGoffs has way better prices. Unless they have changed, Greentop will not show or sell a handgun on Sunday. I heard they changed ownership a while back.

Re: Green Top Sporting Goods
Thanks for the info on DeGoffs. I looked them up and here is a review that someone posted:
Very nice folks at Degoffs! They have reasonable prices for a brick and mortar store and much better pricing on ammo than the rude green monster just 15 minutes away.
Re: Green Top Sporting Goods
Had a very good experience at GT. I went there after the last Gun Show in Fredericksburg a few weeks ago. Found a CZ alloy Rami I was looking for, paid premium price though $609.00. Overall very happy with the service though, very friendly and courteous
. I will definitely have to check out DeGoffs next time.
Thanks, Rich

Re: Green Top Sporting Goods
WOW! I just looked at the used gun price list for Greentop. They want MORE for a used gun than what a new one goes for in my area.
I have been to the store several times, but have never bought a gun there due to the prices. I do usually find some ammo, or whatever that is reasonable though.

Re: Green Top Sporting Goods
I've never understood why they are so popular with their prices so high. I was there last week looking to buy an AR, and the salesperson flipped over the price tag on a stripped S&W, and even he was shocked by the price.
I've given them several opportunities, but the sales people always seem impatient and disinterested. Kind of a "you want it or not" attitude. I'm sure a lot of that has to do with the sheer number of people they serve. That makes it seem more like a frantic gun show than a local gun shop and as a result, I'm just not comfortable shopping there.

I've bought more than my share of shtuff from them, but I always keep this story in the back of my mind: I went in looking for a S&W model 21, one of the NEW CLASSIC REISSUES or whatever they are called. The young chappie at the counter was finally able to break away from talking about fox hunting with his "Best Bud" to ask me if I was shopping or just messin around. I told him what i wanted, to which he replied that i need to go back and do some more homework, because he works there every day and has never heard of one of them. When I asked him to check his computer, he saw one there (TOLDYA) and exclaimed, "Whats THAT poop? Must be some kind of mistake, because I've never heard of this thing"jigray3 wrote:I've never understood why they are so popular with their prices so high. Riiiiiiiiiiight. Ya dont say.
He told me the price and I wasn't impressed, so I asked him to check one last thing and I would quit bugging him. I asked for something simple, a S&W 4566TSW. His reply was "Black powder stuff is in the back, man." I thanked the special chappie and left before I cussed.
Haven't seen him lately, and like i said, I have spent a few dollars on numerous pistols there, but the "Ya want it or not?" Attitude does wrinkle my fur...

Re: Green Top Sporting Goods
I've shopped there for years and always had generally good experience. They usually have what I'm looking for and I found their prices lower than most shops in town. A couple months when I was shopping for an AR, they still had them priced a couple hundred below MSRP when every other shop I checked had inflated their prices well above MSRP. The problem was they sold the ARs that the recieved within a couple hours of putting them on the shelf.
When everyone else is out of ammo, they have it by the case.
I will say I was in there last week and they have increased their prices considerably in the last month. In Feb they where selling M&P15's for $950, now their over $1200.

Re: Green Top Sporting Goods
Man, you guys are whacked trash talking Green Top! They have some of the best prices and largest selections anywhere on the east coast, especially on used guns, and the best reloading supplies. I've been going there over 30 years and always get treated right. So do many lady first time buyers I bring into the store looking to get into shooting sports, or for a CCW class, or for their 1st carry gun. DeGoff's is a good shop, catering mainly to the Cowboy Action crowd or glockers (no serious shooter cares about glocks anyway), and their used selection is somewhat limited. They are pretty good about special orders if they can get it, but so is GT. I've done quite a bit of business with DeGoff's, but rarely find their prices much better than GT although reasonably within range. I rank DeGoff's and GT equally in my patronage. Certainly anyone is better than Gander Mountain or Bass Pro Shop. The only thing I worried about when they moved into town is that GT would *raise* their prices to compete! Earlier this year when Gander was selling a case of primers for nearly $60, GT was still selling them for $27-29. And yet the bubbas still shop at Gander. But if you don't like GT, perfectly fine with me, stay away. I don't want you competing for all the great stuff and deals I find there.
Finally, I have no idea where this "won't sell or show a handgun on Sunday" thing came from. Complete rot. I've been buying guns there since at least 1986, quite a few on Sunday, and have never, ever, heard that. Maybe they won't show you one if you look like you drove down from the 'hood' in NY for the day just to buy a gun, but for regular folks it has never been an issue. And no, they didn't change ownership.

Re: Green Top Sporting Goods
Look behind the counter on the wall in big letters it says....... NO HANDGUNS SOLD OR SHOWN ON SUNDAYS. They may have changed the policy since it's been 14 years since Iv'e been there. I really didn't care to try and buy a used gun for the new prices they sell them for. I have never heard anyone praise them so much, do you work there ?

At one time, I believe it was illgal to show/sell handguns in Virginia on Sunday (or maybe it was just Hanover County), but it was a LONG time ago. I do remember those days at Greentops. Probably an old "blue law." I can't swear to that as a fact, but it seems I remember it.
I've bought a lot of guns at Greentops over the years. A few at DeGoff's too. I've never seen much difference between the two.
You can always find someplace else that's cheaper if you look hard and long enough. I gave up trying long ago. I see something I want, and I want to pay the price, I do. If not, I put it back on the shelf. What you won't find at many other places is the selection GT's has, especially used guns (which is about all I buy anymore). DeGoff's can't come close.
GT's has a great layaway plan too, that I used quite a bit. It seems I have a gun "on hold" there all the time. Pick one up and put another in. They probably have a slot in the back with my name on it.

No, vahunter, I don't work there. Couldn't afford to ... I'd be too deep in the financial hole trying to buy every N-frame that rolled in. However, they know what interests me, so I often find I have stuff "on hold". That's old fashioned customer service.
I'll have to look for the sign though. Maybe I missed it. I mean it's been 14 years since you saw it. Maybe it's a little faded now.

Re: Green Top Sporting Goods
I've bought several pistols and a shotgun at GT, and almost always had a good experience. I think it frankly depends on who waits on you. Prices for new firearms seem to be at somewhat of a premium, but I can't say I've been there lately. I wouldn't hesitate to go in and look around.

I must take exception to your comment about Glocker's. I shoot mine pretty dang good if not better then most people and can handle any other type of weapon that comes down the pike.

Re: Green Top Sporting Goods
greentops ok! but expensive as for degoffs well they are ok to but i get the best deals on guns & ammo at the showplace

Re: Green Top Sporting Goods
I think,a thousand years ago,the owner of Greentops simply did not want to sell handguns on Sunday...personal preference,I believe.I've bought so many guns from them that I have to stay away not to go broke!...have one on lay-away now!The used guns are not priced in stone.Dickering is an art. It's fun, educational and you can leave feeling good rather than as if something just had un-natural barnyard monkey sex on you.Donnie always cuts me a little break (I think). There's always a lot to see there.DeGoff's is my hometown homie Boiees. They crack me up!It's like being married...I go there for the abuse. It keeps me from thinkin' I'm so happy that I'm in Heaven. They always have an interesting variety of consignment items...I've got three guns on layaway there!Once these shops know yer serious, they'll treat you like family.(move in your house, eat yer food and take yer money)Dances,in Colonial Whites is fun, too.
Re: Green Top Sporting Goods
Last couple times I've gone to green top I've had less than stellar experiences.
Dropped by Thursday afternoon to see if they had any of the S&W M&P15-22lr's in stock. I was fully prepared to purchase one if they had any. I waited 15 minutes before getting someone behind the counter to acknowledge me. I asked if they had any in stock and was told "I think we sold it." He immediately went back to shooting the sh*t with his coworkers without even so much as looking over his shoulder to see for sure whether or not it was sold. I'll take my business elsewhere in the future if that's the kind of service I can expect from them.

Re: Green Top Sporting Goods
Bought more than a few things from GT over the years and never had a problem. Prices sometimes a bit high but as they say at the counter "theres a gun show in here seven days a week."
They are price gouging on 9x19 right now though ($18 for WWB = wtf.)
In their defense they always have ammo when nobody else does. Also their .45/.40 prices still seem fair.
Only place I generally avoid around here is Gander. Way high prices and takes 15 minutes to get someone to help you.
Bass Pro I would put somewhere between the two.
Never had a need to deal with Degoffs but never heard anything bad about em.
