A gunman opened fire at the subway entrance to Pentagon complex Thursday evening, wounding two Pentagon police officers, a spokesman said.

The gunman was also shot and in custody, said Chris Layman, a Pentagon Force Protection Agency.

The trio were taken to George Washington University Hospital's emergency room, officials said.

Layman said the suspect walked up to the main entrance of the Pentagon at 6:40 p.m. and opened fire. He hit two officers. The officers fired back, and the suspect was hit. His injures are more serious.

The Pentagon was on lockdown for a short while.

The Blue-Yellow line at the Pentagon station is closed.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

'Sources say the suspect is 36-year-old John Patrick Bedell. He suffered critical wounds. The Medical Examiner's Office announced his dead early Friday morning.

The Associated Press reports there are internet postings suggesting the suspected gunman harbored resentment for the U.S. military and had doubts about the 9/11 attacks. In an internet posting under the screen name "JPatrickBedell," he wrote he was determined to see justice for the 1991 death of a Marine in California. The death was ruled a suicide. The writer said the case would be a step toward revealing the truth behind the September 11th terrorist attacks'

I heard this guy was from california. It seems he was also a 9-11 "truther" (like some in the obama administration), we see he has a problem with the military(like some in the admin) He may have been in line to become Obama's gun czar.....

I can't wait to hear the spin on this dude...........

Cant believe he did this. The first people you see are heavily armed guards wearing body armor. They carry some nice weapons. Glad I didnt get caught in the lockdown and that no one except this turd was hurt.

Btw, another case where a weapons ban simply does not work. I wonder why...

I wish the two Pentagon officers a speedy recovery, I wonder if the Metro entrance into the building will be open this morning, I know the Metro station itself is closed.

I guess this nutjob didn't see the gun-free zone signs. Maybe they need a larger sign?

Hopefully the two officers will make a speedy recovering.

i read an article just now by hte AP about this and it bothered me. it said he was "well armed". he had two 9mm semi automatic weapons and extra magazines of ammo. Am i the only one who thinks this is an overly glorified statement by the press? how many of us actually carry 2 guns at a time? apparently the press are trying to say if you do, it could mean you are on your way to becoming a random shooter of innocents...

To most of the uninformed public, anyone with more than one gun has an "arsenal". Besides who needs a gun at a D.C. Metro station, right?

Btw, for all that's interested the Pentagon is not in DC nor is the servicing metro station. Its in good ole VA.

The Metro entrance was closed all day today. It is really scarey how much information that obtained about the gentleman from his internet blogs in just a few short hours after his death. The chief of the pentagon police thinks 2 9 MM is well armed we should invite him to 1 of our shoot & greets. Just glad the 2 officers are going to be ok.

Ya think. Man, I get nervous going in and out of there. Outside by the metro entrance isnt too bad but right inside the door there are heavily armed guards everywhere and they aint just carrying pistols...it would be a killing field in there if anything ever went down.

and that was before the shooting, it is a whole lot scarcer now. understandably they are jumpy now but it worries me when you walk by and they have finger on the trigger.

Yup and lets just say I've managed to avoid going to work for a couple of days...they give me the willies anyway, especially the guy they always have at the top of the escalator. I cant imagine him letting go towards the entry doors with that little mp from way up there...

Having worked at that funny 5 sided building(I call it wonder land - so many egos and bullshit surprised anything gets done)) for 6 years I could tell stories about the world’s biggest collection of Barney Fifes. But in light of what just went down, now may not be the appropriate time. :hysterical:

I dont think the Pentagon security are barney fifes - far from it. The appear to be very sharp and well trained. Most of the DOD security at other buildings are though -- like Chrystal City and Rosslyn...
