My name is Dan I am active duty Navy and also an avid hunter, fisherman and gun enthuiast. I am due to transfer to NAS Oceana later this month from Florida where I have spent the past six years. I found the site last night and spent several hours reading through threads. I think there are some very knowledgeable members out there and we're going to have a lot to talk about. I am a firm beliver in Armed Citizens and have had a CHP in Florida for years. My first questions to you all are. 1. Where is the closest Rifle / Pistol / Trap range to Norfolk? and 2. Where are the Feral Hogs in Virginia? I'm glad to be aboard and look forward to reading more of your postings.

Welcome to VGOF, Dan :welcome:

For indoor shooting in Norfolk, Bob's Gun & Tackle is the closest. You can also visit Lynnhaven Shooting Range (A&P Arms), which is closer to Oceana. The only outdoor range we have is C2 Shooting Center in VB.

As far as feral hogs, not too many around Norfolk / VA Beach. I'm sure some of our members in Central VA would have a better idea.

I've camped with my son's scout troop in False Cape. There are hogs there, and it might be right up your alley...

Before you get your hopes up, a quick search turned up this -

Which would be sad, because it really is a beautiful place. Check out Andy Thompson's hog hunt from 2 years ago in the RTD.

Guess I need to put in a call to Guvner Bob...

Thanks for the input I prefer to hunt private land, so I don't have restrictions on what I can use. Is it pretty comon to only be able to use slugs or buck shot on public land?

Yes, it is pretty common around the more populated centers in VA. Some NOVA areas are bow only. However, I heard that some states are reconsidering the whole shotgun only regulations after PA did a big study about ricochet dangers and found slugs worse than rifle FMJ! The study is real, but otherwise it is just rumors of change, but I can be hopeful.
