CHP and Vehicles

Hi All--
I read recently a bill was introduced to permit leaving a firearm in a vehicle if it is in a locked container.
This strongly suggests it is currently illegal to leave a firearm in an unattended vehicle, whether it is in a lockbox or not.
Can anyone confirm this, and if so, do you know the basis (i.e.; a case or statute) which makes leaving a firearm in a vehicle illegal?
Any guidance or comments will be welcome. Thanks!

I believe that the bill to which you are referring is geared more toward allowing Non-CHP holders to store their firearm in a glove compartment or center console in order that it doesn't act as a missile hazard in the case of a crash. Currently, without a CHP, you can only Open Carry, which current law requires that you place your firearm in a conspicuous place such as on a seat or dashboard when you are in your vehicle.

Nope, perfectly legal. No statute exists regarding that.

Thanks guys!
I should have read today's VACDL's update which makes it clear the bill is intended to apply to non-CHP holders. Thanks again
