New to VA, coming from Hawaii

We've lived in Hawaii for the last 12 years and are now moving to Ft. Eustis. We're looking forward to seeing VA. This was the 6th site to pop up when I googled "gun forums" so that says something about VA being a gun friendly state. That'll be a BIG change from HI. I'm also into hot rods, mainly Mopars.
As soon as I get to VA I'll be looking for a full sized .45acp for general self defense and carry. This will be the first pistol I've purchased but not the first one I've shot. I've spent A LOT of time with the M9 and love it. I've got a few models on my short list of prospects: M&P45, FNP45, Sig P250, Beretta PX4 45, Para 1911 GI Expert, XD45, CZ97, Taurus 24/7 or PT845, HK45, USP45. I'm looking at around $600 but I'll go more if I'm convinced it's worth it. A lot of these I like because they're lefty friendly. (i'm wrong handed) Others are on there because of reputations as great guns. I'm curious about the 1911 as carry guns. I seems that the hammer and spur would dig in the old love handles but a lot of folks love them so they can't be too bad. Never fired one either. You'll notice Glocks aren't on there. It's because of the grip angle. Anybody got comments about these? Am I missing something?
Is there a wait period to aquire a handgun? What about a permit?
