Savage Smokeless Muzzleloader BOOM !

I'm guessing that the shooter tried either the wrong type or too much smokeless powder in this rifle. The orginal poster from where I got this said the pics of the shooters hand were too graphic to show. Lucky he wasn't killed. Bright side is that Savage does make strong bolts.

Well those things are ratedfor 150 gr. Maybe he didnt seat the bullet down on top of the powder or pellets - if he used the right powder and not too much...

This one you can use either a black powder substitute or certain smokeless powder. What ever he did he screwed up.

Ah. Certainly looks that way. Not sure I'd want to try that unless they had a nice instruction book tested at the factory - repeatedly...

There's always some dinkus who'll blow up a gun either out of stupidity, or some relentless search for the biggest boom. I wouldn't put it past some to try this to get a lawsuit against the gun maker for damages.

If the bullett was not seated and was half way up the barrel this could happen with BP. Several thing could cause a bullet to place it self up the barrel. I was standing on line shooting comp. when the shooter beside me blew his barrel. His ram rod was burred and pulled the mimi back out to with in 12 in. of the muzzle and he was shooting a target load of black powder. As a good safety rule, after you settle on you load MARK your ram rod so you know for sure you bullett is seated properly

There are guys here locally who I hear are trying to work up smokeless powder loads for regular 209x50 muzzleloaders. They need prayer.

I saw this one or another one just like it awhile back. The shooter admitted that he probably double loaded it, didn't use a witness mark on his ramrod, forget there was already one load and then put another load on top of it.

Blackpowder is very forgiving in comparison to smokeless. A double load of the correct smokeless in a rifle or pistol and the gun comes apart. A double load of black and half the powder goes down range.

As far as smokeless in an BP gun, I have been thinking that trailboss might work. If I has someplace to test (safely test) I might try it.

This one's been running around a while.

There was a guy who was fired from savage, shortly there after blew up one of their guns, and ran around telling everyone how unsafe they are.... do some searching on the web its easy to find.

Also there are a few where people admit to double charging, not seating the bullet all the way, and other things that we know will lead to bad results.

Shooting a muzzle loader __IS__ reloading. If you're not going to take the time and effort to do it right, then you can get into some bad problems.

I'll admit to having pulled a short start once awhile back. It's a good way to wreck a fine barrel. I got lucky: I had a light target load in and the worst I had of it was a weird sound and a missed target. Paying attention while reloading is really, really important.
