I have started going to Old Dominion Shooting Range every other Thursday. Thursdays are concealed Carry Day, so there is no range fee with proof of a valid concealed carry permit. You have to shoot their ammo but I did not find it overpriced. I normally bring my own targets. You also have the ability to rent other guns to try them out, and exchange the rental once to try another. The only thing might be the additional cost of different ammo, for the second rental. For grins I ended up renting a Ruger Mark II and the cost of the ammo and rental were cheaper than the cost of my normal ammo. I am thinking a Ruger Mark III hunter might make an affordable gun for the range....

I've been to Dominion a few times, but I am leary. I have two friends that have been hit by ricochet there.

Just an FYI, its called Dominion Shooting range, not Old Dominion.

Old Dominion is where I go to school and when I saw this thread I was like, they have a shooting range there!? Got really excited for a second.

Sorry about the confusion. Mods is it possible for you to take the "Old" out of the original, it doesn't look like I have the ability to edit the original post anymore. Thanks for your help.

that gets a WTF?
is it set up improperly? or what? RSO's?
were your friends injured or wounded? and if so, how was that handled by the range? did this occur at the same time? can you graph this out for me/us a little bit...

it is this kind of thing that gives the anti's pure kero to light a blaze with...and makes people familier with firearms raise an eyebrow and give the look...

Ranges are supposed to be controled environments in which to safetly practice shooting...anything else is called "live fire zone"...and it tends to decrease my interest level in attendance...

I used to go to Dominion every few months, but I haven't been in a while. Thanks for your post. I'll have to get back out there. Thursdays sound good!

Thanks for asking that, I also was WTF when I heard that. Please clarify! When dealing with ricochet bullets, it's not as light hearted as hit with ricochet debris or some other element!!

The ricochets are from shooters not shooting correctly. They hit the floor, or walls, causing an odd "angle" to the back of the range, then that ricochets back towards the line.

Did not know about Thursday's CCW Day... think that's a grand idea. May have to go shooting more often.

If you think that ricochets dont occur at a safe, indoor range - well then you haven't been shooting long enough.

I remember shooting at steel targets at Blackwater, targets that were a good 15+ yards away, and catching frags left and right. Sheeit happens.

This was exactly my thought when I read this. My son was hit by a ricochet at Blue Ridge Arsenal a few years back. I was standing right behind him and he shot through the dead center of the target at about 25 feet. I then observed something headed back at us which struck him in the hip. We picked it up and it was a pancaked bullet. I have to assume it went down range, pancaked against the back wall and through some freak situation came back at us.

I guess the energy is well spent by the time it returns however. I've never had the luxury to shoot in a range, as my farm has always been enough.

I am smiling when I type this, but you boys seem to take no small pride in ducking reverse flying lead, and have given it an experience marker, and a level of acceptance that i find somewhat disconcerting, but that is just my 2' yard stick talking...

I am very much with Username on this one... I shoot 98% Outdoors...and may have to up that to 100%...

If I ever shoot indoors it is at Bobs gun shop in Norfolk. I have been hit by ricochets there before I have even had it stick in between my knuckles and draw blood. I think that is pretty normal for indoor ranges. That is why you have to ware safety glasses.

I go up to Dominion about 1 once month with friends and family. I've never been hit by ricochets or had anyone with me hit. Nor have a noticed anyone hit. That said, I'm sure it happens. They have some cracked and damaged safety glasses hanging on the wall by the counter. They also have some plates that you can shoot and they are maybe 15 yards out. I just wish you could bring your own ammo.

I've been hit by a ricochet at an indoor range. I believe that most indoor ranges don't allow high-powered rifles for a reason, as a ricochet from a 30-06 is probably more dangerous than a 9mm. It really isn't too painful though, just like someone poked you a little hard. I know some ranges have like shredded tires as a backstop to help prevent ricochets. Don't know how well it works.

anyway, does Dominion allow 18 year olds (me) to shoot, or do I have to drag along my brother and/or parent, or can I not shoot at all?
