Gamers?
Any PC gamers on the boards here? I have a PS3 but use that for blu-ray movies most of the time.
I play Modern Warfare 2 and World at War most of the time on PC.
If there are some, add me in steam and maybe we can frag a little. Username is d1545t3r. Unkn0wN was taken, grrrr. I've been using Unkn0wN for decades, but on steam all variations were taken, so I had to come up with something. I do go by Unkn0wN in game though.

Re: Gamers?
I spend a large amount of time playing Call of Duty on Xbox... in fact a big motivation for some of the weapons I have bought have been from using them in the game... the odd part of all that being that the designers did an amazing job replicating real life to the game, as the feel and characteristics in game are very similar to when actually shooting them.
I own the FAL, the AK-47, the F2000, several of the shotguns, and a few of the handguns.
Right now working on expanding into some of the sniper rifles.
Except for the fully auto stuff or other NFA items, one day I'd like to own every gun in the game

Fallout 3 and other RPG's on the 360.
Fallout 3 is fun with its different weapons and survival in the wastelands around DC.

Man, seems like a lot of people I know are xbox players. I've been a die hard PS person myself. But I've always played FPS games on PC since the beginning of online gaming in the days of Doom and Quake.
Username, As far as owning all the weapons from the games, my wife would put a halt to that before I could get them all, lol. Would be great, but I know it would never happen.... just too many.

I'm an on-off gamer and PC builder and sometimes overclocker. My last build was over a year ago and havent played a game in almost as long. I like to do a build with state of the art, overclock it to the max just for fun, and then tune it back a little for long term use. I've got a bunch of games somewhere...my favorties were Doom III (anyone remember the original?), Quake, Half-life, COD, Far Cry, and a couple others...

Wow. I guess so. Banned by the Consumer Product Safety Commission in 1988. Someone needs to ban them maybe...
Here's the link to recommend something for a ban to the CPSC. I recommend using it to recommend banning them...

.... you aren't admitting to having lawn darts in your arsenal are you? My God man, what are you?, some kind of extremist? Don't you understand the danger this game exposes the environment to? Especially living that close to the epicenter of American Policy? One misplaced lawn dart could seriously damage the protected, yellow-bellied- leftwing-ed, Dungbeetle.....

Yes, I remember the original..... my post right above yours mentions Doom and Quake. Those were some awesome days. I have all the others you mention as well.
I like building newer and better stuff as well.... That part of my job at work, to keep their stuff going. I am in the process of re-modeling my man cave. All new Stuff has been bought for the room. My gaming PC will be hooked up to the Samsung 55" 240Hz LED, along with the PS3 (for movies) and of course normal HD TV. Then there's the new Yamaha receiver and polk audio speakers. I have all the cabling in the walls, now all I have to do is put up the drywall and paint.
But the man-cave isn't just for gaming, it is mainly my sports room.

In all seriousness though, I understand they have come out with "new" studies claiming that shooter games help young people develop quick thinking skills and eye to hand coordination that "may" help them in combat. OK, well it wasn't that long ago they had studies saying that videos games caused people to kill indiscriminately. The fact is that being proficient in video gaming only proves one thing, you have too much time on your hands . The idea that being able to withstand hordes of flesh eating zombies during hours of gameplay in any way prepares you for the stress of actually being shot by a real person who really wants to kill you is absurd. Video game proficiencey to me, is a lot like what we used to call 'beer muscles', the more some people drink, the tougher they think they are, and usually get smacked down. I read a study one time about the origins of repetitive training. During the civil war, many soldiers where found dead with their weapons not only "not fired" but doubled packed. They found that even though these men knew what to do, during the battle, some forgot that they hadn't discharged their weapon, and reloaded causing the weapon to not fire correctly, and causing them to be killed . My only point is there is no substitute for intense, repetitive drilling, by a meaner -than- a snake- Drill Sergeant to get young people motivated enough to react properly under that kind of intense and sometimes horrific stress........my opinion, games are meant to keep kids busy.

As far as having too much time on my hands, that isn't the case. I do not play every day. I play maybe 3 days of the week and an Hour max, most of the time it is about 45 minutes. I don't have the time to do it. And I do play because they are fun. I don't just play the shooting games, I play sports game (football) and racing games. I once joined an online group of guys that were all vets and older. Most of them 50+ years old. I quickly withdrew myself from that group because they were WAAAAYYY too serious about the gaming and "ranks" of the group. They were getting way to "Military" for me in a online game. So, not eveyone "Has to much time on their hands" or does it for the shooting the bad guy scenario. A lot do it for fun. I have so many adults that love playing video games because they are fun.
But, yes, they do keep kids busy. Our 6 year old has a Wii in his room as of christmas and he would spend all day on it at first.... not no more, I Limit him on it. And he has to earn time to play it. So he gets a max of 45 minutes to an hour of playing time a day if he is lucky. I am a firm believer of kids not playing video games all day. What he does after he moves out will be his own thing.

Re: Gamers?
I play COD: MW2 on PC. I can't stand to play FPS on console. For me, it has to be on the PC.
On occasion I'll play WaW. I still have the COD:MW1 game, too, though not loaded on at this time.
Username, please tell me the F2000 is better in real life than the piece of just they make it out to be in the game.
It's strange, most of the weapons are unrealistically accurate with only a couple exceptions. I love using the .44 Magnum, especially when 300-350 meter head shots aren't difficult.
Also, just a friendly tip in case you didn't know; weapon mounted shotguns have the best range of all the available shotguns in the game. Figure that one out.
I know I play too much on my days off. It's something I'm attempting to work on.
I agree that it doesn't make people want to kill, but between the games and movies these days, it does make it easier for something to pull the trigger on another human. The problem with double packing and never firing rifles among other events are why the military changed to silhouette style targets vs just round ones. It gets the brain more used to shooting at humanoid targets. Now, that doesn't mean, people don't still freeze on the trigger when aiming down the sites at another person, but if we had a way to test it in a controlled environment, I think it would show that the majority have less trouble than back a hundred years ago.

I didn't make my point clear, the reason some soldiers didn't shoot, wasn't that they were reluctant to fire on the enemy, it was that during the confusion(fog of war some call it) they forgot they had not fired and tried to reload.

I think first person shooters are a great way to relieve pressure and stress when you feel like you could throttle someone...a better substitute is to punch holes in paper targets or pepsi cans...

Exactly. Nothing releaves more stress than hunting ghouls(that resemble a certain member of Congress) in the destroyed DC metro system and blowing thier heads off with a sniper rifle.zephyp wrote:I think first person shooters are a great way to relieve pressure and stress when you feel like you could throttle someone...a better substitute is to punch holes in paper targets or pepsi cans...

Re: Gamers?
Here's a simple little game that could be useful for dry-fire practice.
http://www.soft-collection.com/#SoftCol ... ting-Range
You should be able to use your carry gun if you combine it with something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Laserlyte-Pistol- ... B002N2B0DO
Note: It doesn't like my web cam so I haven't successfully tried it yet.
I'm not what you would call a gamer but I've been slowly putting the pieces together for a gun simulator and dry-fire trainer. Currently I'm in the process of finding the right software. It would be laser based so I need to find a FPS that can be hacked to aim like a light gun game. I'm considering using this as a base: http://www.garrysmod.com/
I'm thinking it would be pretty cool to have a game map setup like an IDPA/IPSC course of fire complete with shot timing and target scoring. It would be even cooler to play/practice with others over the net.
Suggestions?
Since there's probably a bunch of people snowed in, here's a web shoot/no-shoot app:
http://backhand.uchicago.edu/Center/ShooterEffect/
And a bunch of flash based shooting games: http://www.quickwars.com/?qw=4,4,0

Re: Gamers?
GS, I've always understood it as a combination. The fog of war made some forget and others were afraid to end a human life. Realize that alot of these guys were conscripted. Many were hunters, but some probably never saw a rifle before. The fear of shooting another human was more apparent in later wars which is what prompted the target change.
The military figures if your body's muscle memory is to shoot a humanoid target rather than a circular one, it will be easier when ol' Muhammed Icrahpt Madrawrs pops up shooting at Pvt. Snuffy for Pvt. to react properly. As I mentioned before, I don't feel that video games cause people to want to kill, but do make it easier for some kid to pull the trigger without thinking about the reality of the situation. I would argue that the current generation is much more numb to violence and gore than generations gone by.
