Transfer Pistol to Person Under 21.. How?

Hey guys, new member here with a legal question. A friend of mine's father owns a nice Glock 21C and I was wondering if it was legal for me to purchase it from him, seeing as I am under the age of 21. I researched this a bit, and found this thread here was most helpful:

While it has convinced me that there is some legal manner in which this can be done, what specifically must be done to transfer the registration of the firearm? Whom should we register it with, any local FFL holder? Thanks for any help guys.

18.2-308.7. Possession or transportation of certain firearms by persons under the age of 18; penalty.
It shall be unlawful for any person under 18 years of age to knowingly and intentionally possess or transport a handgun or assault firearm anywhere in the Commonwealth. For the purposes of this section, "handgun" means any pistol or revolver or other firearm originally designed, made and intended to fire single or multiple projectiles by means of an explosion of a combustible material from one or more barrels when held in one hand and "assault firearm" means any (i) semi-automatic centerfire rifle or pistol which expels single or multiple projectiles by action of an explosion of a combustible material and is equipped at the time of the offense with a magazine which will hold more than 20 rounds of ammunition or designed by the manufacturer to accommodate a silencer or equipped with a folding stock or (ii) shotgun with a magazine which will hold more than seven rounds of the longest ammunition for which it is chambered. A violation of this section shall be a Class 1 misdemeanor. ...
Assuming you are both residents of VA, and you do not have a disqualifying conditions such as felony conviction, mental illness, etc. and you are 18 years of age. (It does not actually say you cannot own a gun under the age of 18, but you could not do much with it off your personal property without an adult present). He can just sell the handgun to you directly. You cannot go through a FFL because they have to follow the federal law that keeps them from selling handguns to those under 21. The previous thread got it right, you can buy the gun from a private sale, but you may have some issues buying ammo for it.

Along the lines of what Wally said.....
There's no handgun registration in Va. No need to tell anyone anything about model, serial numbers, etc. The father can just sell you the gun like if he was selling you his lawnmower. As long as you are eligible to possess a firearm (no felonies, mental health issues, over 18, etc)

As has already been said, no registration required in VA (except on TV) and no FFL required if you both are VA residents. You can openly carry at 18 but you cannot get a CHP until 21.

Really? I knew you had to be 21 to get a CHP, but thought persons under 21 could only open carry rifles.. No? Its been a while since I've reviewed Virginia's carry laws though... Ill give them another look.

OC at 18 is correct.
The law only bars someone under 18 from possessing a handgun. 18+ is fine for OC.

Regarding Proshooter's post, above. By all means DO NOT BUY the lawnmower. I did exactly that one time, and the next thing I knew my old man wanted me to use it.

I had always heard this was correct, but a guy at a small gun shop near town told me i was wrong when i asked him about it

I'm 20 and own 3 handguns, all private sale. Extensively researched, completely legal. Although I do have to purchase ammo online.
First one my friend bought from an FFL, then we did a private sale.
Second and third bought used from previous owners. No FFLs, No registration, No problems.
You will NEVER see the code of Virginia say that it is legal for 18 and over to possess. That is not the function of the law. They may only prohibit (infringe), not grant rights.

Excellent point. If the law dont say you cant do it chances are you can.
