Well, this certainly isn't good...

A lone shooter was responsible for multiple deaths and injuries Tuesday and more than 100 law enforcement officials had him circled in woods where they believe he is hiding, state police said.
A spokeswoman could not say how many were dead or injured in the shootings or what sparked the violence, but a source told the Associated Press that eight people are dead.
The gunman also fired at a sheriff's deputy and a state police helicopter, which had to land with a ruptured fuel tank after one or more rounds struck it, the spokeswoman, Corrine Geller, said. No police were injured.
"We believe we have the male suspect confined in a wooded area," Geller said.
The violence began shortly after noon when an injured man was found on a rural stretch of road. A deputy who went to investigate fled after he heard gunshots, Geller said.
"When the deputy arrived on the scene, that's when he heard several shots," State Police Sgt. Thomas Molnar said.
He said there were "several fatalities and one injury." Police were still trying to determine the suspect's relationship with the victims.
Residents near the shooting scene were told to remain inside and a small Christian school was locked down until state police could escort about 60 children from the building.
Resident Bethel Hawkins said police warned families to remain inside with their doors locked. She said many homeowners in the area are senior citizens.
"We're just being cautious, keeping our doors locked, not going outside," said Hawkins, who lives about 2 miles up the road from where the shootings occurred. "Our church service is supposed to be tonight, but we talked with our pastor and told him we're not coming out. We're not going out in the dark not knowing what's out there. But we trust in the Lord to take care of us."
Appomattox is in a county of about 15,000 approximately 100 miles southwest of Richmond. It is best known as the place where Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant to end the Civil War.

A suspect in the shooting deaths of eight people at a rural Virginia home has surrendered without incident, Virginia State Police said.
Well, I mean, besides shooting down a police helicopter and engaging 100 law enforcement in an 12-hour search and standoff.
But other than that... totally uneventful.

Well, when you're totally surrounded it doesn't much matter which way you shoot, you're bound to hit something.

yeah, my point was, I was trying to picture hundreds of deputies, state troopers, swat, dogs, and a helicopter.......surrounding an acre of woods.........one guy in the middle....... and everyone just waiting each other out. Thats the way is usually goes, the cops wait for the guy to shoot himself, and the bad guy waits until he comes to his senses......

The latest report I've seen states that he had a "multitude" of explosives in his home, and was wearing a "bullet-proof" vest. I'm still waiting for the reports of an arsenal of "assault weapons" too.

That happened a little too close to home. People are getting stupid lately. Yesterday a 13 yeard old shot a deputy in NC. I heard the deputy returned fire killing the kid.

The AP story covering the issue of the bombs at least calls him a "gun enthusiast" and not a gun nut.

Brady's posting on Facebook:
Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence - Another concealed permit carrier gone bad: "Appomattox County court records show a concealed weapons permit was issued to a Christopher Bryan Speight three times between 1999 and last year. The issue dates match the five-year renewal period for concealed handgun permits under Virginia law."

The Facebook drivel is just too much:
Jim Starowicz
According to earlier reports, this dangerous clown had concealed weapons licenses and was updating them as to the law, thus this was one of them there responsible?? gun owners who rail against enforcing the gun laws because of it's second amendment right to be a Killer when he feels like it!!

Jim, I hope you are writing your Congressman stating your displeasure with their inaction on the gun control issue. They are afraid if they take up gun control the will be voted out of office. While that may be true they are there to serve the people. By the way they act you know all they are doing is looking after their own political future. The Brady Campaign and it's followers have the right to demand more action.

Here's a surprise for you, the moderator of the Brady Fan Page on Facebook deleted my comments. I guess dissenting opinions are unwelcome in their world.

They must have mistaken you for one of those smelly, ignorant, right-wing, gun-toting, teabagger folks. I hope you straighten them out.

I reposted my comments this morning and they remained for about 4 hours. Now they have completely kicked me off as a "Fan" which means (for those of you that don't use Facebook) I can no longer make comments or post to their FB site. Disagree = get barred. Brady Motto "There's only one opinion and it's MINE!"

I've been tossed from a few places for being, how shall we say... "dedicated" to my convictions?

Let's split this off to a different thread. Might be fun to hang out with the Brady bunch on facebook for awhile and discuss accordingly
