Ok guys so I want to competition shoot, Ive grown up around guns.... well since I can remember Ive shot a lot and I want to get into competition shooting for my father who passed away quite some time ago because he always wanted me to do it.

So 2010 Im going to try it for him.

I was just given/loaned (my step dads) gun 9mm browning but she has some rust need some advice on it I know technically its not going to hurt it if I shoot it.

The internals are rust free, no rust in the barrel. No rust inside it at all just outside it does look a little deep so

Its a 9mm Luger browning Im going to shoot the crap outta this gun LOL

I really want to strive to be good so my dad can look down and smile and say thats my boy!

So anyway any advice would be great. Going tomorrow to check out the competition place.

Is their anything I can personally do to try and get some of the rust off without hurting the finish?

Pickup a small bottle of Birchwood Casey BR1 and use a light abrasive, like a Scotchbrite pad.

You will eventually need to have it re-blued anyway.

Or hit it with some "Break Free" and a toothbrush in the slide serrations and either "Scotchbrite or 0000 steel wool. As Oakridge mentioned you may end up having it refinished sometime in the future, so right now you just want to stop the progression of the oxidation.
Walmart has the best prices on ammunition, until such time as you decide to try reloading.

Lee also makes a 4 hole press so you don't have to change dies between functions. http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?p ... ber=880135

SEG's a new training facility and range in Ashburn. Three indoor ranges, two 25 yd ranges and a 50 yd. Have both range passes and annual memberships. Well, if there's one thing I've learned from watching TV it's that you shouldn't take it upon yourself to "restore" a weapon yourself. definitely do not use anything abrasive if you want to keep the value.

I occasionally get some pitting on my 1911 slide. I just put a dab of light machine grease on a soft rag and vigorously rub. That usually clears it up and also helps to seal the metal.
