hi im new to virginia, and i have a ccw from florida, and I am wondering if i can carry my gun with me concealed while I am here. As far as i know Virginia is a state where i can carry it legally but i want to make sure first. thanks in advance

VA does have reciprocity with FL and will honor a valid permit. Here's a link where you can get the scoop on VA CC laws so you know at least a little. If you need more please ask.

Btw, if you are moving here then you should get a VA permit, change address, new DL, etc.

Shouldn't be too hard. Just check with the Circut Court Clerk in the County you now reside. Present your CCL and that should allow you to forego the credidation portion. I'm sure they'll still conduct a background check.

If you're active military, I think you can get by with the Florida DL, (others will correct me if that is wrong) but you need to get the Virginia CHP to avoid the gray areas of concealed handgun law. By the way, to buy a handgun you do need to be a Virginia resident, for 90 days minimum. An FFL is gonna want 2 forms of ID, one being government-issued, so the Virginia DL would be handy to have in any case if you plan to do much gun-shopping. You can use the CHP for the second ID, but the gov't issued ID has to be a face card.

Active and prior service. Just present a copy of your DD-214. The court is also a great place to save a "certified" copy of your DD-214 in a safe place. I think it only cost 10 bucks.

I thought I had read that the 90 day residency thing was not the actual law? Or is that change of address only?

You do not receive a "break" or "discount" in Virginia because you have a valid CHP from another state. You must follow all procedures as defined in VA 18.2-308(D)

You will be required to download and complete the form from the VSP site

You must submit the completed and notarized form, with proof of competency and $50 fee, to the clerk of the court or police department as required.

This is only required once you have changed your legal residence to Virginia.

Folks I'd like to point out that the OP's statement is ambiguous about residency and if he is here because of a permanent move or visit. Also, OP posted a WTB for an fn herstal 5.7 pistol and an AK or AR lower.

Technically i am living in VA now, but i dont want to change my license, because i still own a home in florida and i will be going back and forth, here for winter and florida for summer for business reasons. i am currently applying for a non resident chp. I am not going to change my licence just to buy a gun. I can get them in florida and bring them up here. Another question: What if i purchase one online and have it shipped to a local ffl? i know VA is strict with their laws so i get confused on what i can and cant do. i appreciate the help, even if i have sounded a bit naive, but i rather get information from other gun enthusiasts like myself.

If you can satisfy the purchase requirements in Virginia, then there's no reason you can't buy online and have the gun shipped to VA FFL. However, it sounds like you would be better off shipping it to a FL FFL instead of VA.

Ok. You may be technically living here but legally still a FL resident.
