Hello everyone! Stumbled upon these forums while searching for various gun info through google. Great Site!!
Now, a little about myself. Name is Jerry, originally from Michigan (go Blue) and landed in VA by way of the military about 9 years ago. Love it here. Grew up with guns, had my first one (20ga singleshot shotgun) when I was 11 (turning 40 on Sunday). By the time I was 15-16 had a number of shotguns, .22's and my beloved .30-06. But left at 18 when I joined the Army and throughout the years, my mom sold/gave away my guns to other family members. My step-dad still has my .30-06 grrrrrr.
Well anyways, my wife totally hates guns and always swore she would never let me have any. We live in a very nice neighborhood and about 3 weeks ago, we got woke up early by our neighbor and about 6 cops outside. Someone had broken into 5 cars (including my wife's truck).
That night I asked my wife "What if they would have came into the house?, That's why I want a gun." Next day we were at a gun shop
Walked out with a XDM-40.
Wow........... was I rambling or what? LOL
Anyways, I am glad I found this place and plan on sticking around for a while.

Next step is to get you back a .30-06. My 710 .30-06 is my favorite hunk of metal.

Jerry,
Glad that you had some gun heritage in your upbringing.
Sorry that you and your wife had to experience some bad stuff recently. Although a negative experience, hopefully it may allow you to renew/pursue an interest again. And I mean this in ernest... While my wife has no interest in "gun stuff", she does appreciate the safety factor that it can bring to the family situation, both at home and when we're out (concealed carry.) So, while she has little interest, she is OK with my range trips or "skills training", which I find enjoyable.
If safety is an issue, you should encourage your gal to learn how to shoot your gun(s) too, or better yet, one of her own. Although she may not be interested in shooting as a hobby, she should know her way around the tools if the necessity calls for them.

Welcome! Sorry about the incident that triggered the opportunity. Glad that you were able to return to your gun owning heritage. The concept of possibly needing to protect the family inspired my wife to learn to shoot. Invested in some personal instruction (as in not me) and she now very much enjoys her range time. Hopefully she will never need the skills but she is much more comfortable knowing she has some options. ...that and she likes the fact she shoots a glock more accurately than I do.
p.s. my daughter is now excited to learn as soon as she is old enough. If I were not limited by age guidelines at the range, she would already know how.

This is exactly our intentions. She don't like guns, but wants to learn to shoot. She agrees that if it's in the house, she needs to know how to use it.

Wife? That would be a new toy for me, not her! LOL

I hear ya on that. That is her biggest fear......... the kids finding the gun(s) one day. First of all it is locked in a safe. I told her the best way to prevent that is to not hide them from the kids. Let them know we have it and teach them all about it. I was raised around guns, my whole family was. If you educate them, teach them proper handling of them, proper shooting, cleaning, etc, you won't have any problems.
When I was growing up, we didn't have safes for the guns, they were just leaned up in the corner of the closet. As kids, we didn't go messing with them, we were raised with them. To us they were just another part of the house. But I know, today's world is different. My kids are 6 yrs old and 1 1/2 yrs old. I will wait a little longer for the 6 yr old to show him for the wife's sake. Have to get her comfortable first.
