Here the audacity of the wait times:

1.) I buy a can on Monday beginning of Feb. Paperwork submitted, check cashed. Clock starts.

2.) Coworker buys a can on Tuesday beginning of Feb. Paperwork submitted, check cashed. Clock starts.

3.) Muthahumper pings me in the woods in camp, "HEY! DIDJA GIT YER CAN!?!? I GOT MY PAPERWORK YESTERDAY! Just shootin' the (expletives) outta it! Thanks for telling me about the last one in stock!"

Dang... that is a long time. What are they waiting for?

What is the difference, other than length of time, between the firearm purchase background check and the suppressor background check? Is it just 1930s technology for the suppressor? I mean, really...

There is no difference. Only stall tactics and and excessive taxation.

Well, ATF does get to record ownership but still...and that has always been a questionable result of the process.

I'm starting to get interested.
What is the process, duration, total cost and best way to get one or more cans? Can someone educate me please?
It may be the last chance to get it here in Virginia.

I can help you, but we should meet in person. There are some critical documents I need to share with you.

short version, find the item you want, buy it from the dealer.
Dealer fills out a Form 4. You fill out your sections, add photos, finger prints, and $200 check, mail to ATF. wait 9-12 months. Go back to your dealer, pick up approved form 4, and your item.

There are some things you should consider, ie trusts when deciding to purchase, but that is the long version, and if you want to know more, drop me a pm, and I'll be happy to get you additional information.

Also if you want to try some things out, that can be arranged too. The reality of cans vs tv/movie is quite different. I've got a 25 yd range at home now, if I can get some free time, the option for 100-300 yd is gong to happen some day.
