New resident looking for nearby clubs and fun competitions

Hey guys, I recently moved down to NOVA (dumfries area) after a 10 year stint in Philly.

We had a PA gun forum that i was fond of and there was a sub forum dedicated to posting events coming up locally; anything from IDPA to skeet to informal "practical shoots" with rifles and pistols. Is there any sort of thing like that here?

Moreover, I'm keen to find a place where I can shoot outside. I hear good things about Elite from a coworker, but shooting at an indoor range is still shooting at an indoor range.

Hello, by the way :) Looking forward to checking the place out. And getting a Va CCW

Welcome.

I'm sure some guys will chime in from NOVA with closer options but CSA (colonial shooting academy) in Richmond has all of what you're looking for and is a great indoor range. Depending on where you are in Dumb Fries and the traffic on 95 you should be able to get there in 45min to an hour.

There are some WMA's that you can shoot on for outdoor but I'm not really familiar with official outdoor ranges.

We have a member that has a nice outdoor range that we've had some get togethers at but I'll let him to expand on that if he chooses.

Welcome!

There are a few places to shoot outside. I live a few minutes north of you, in Woodbridge. The outdoor ranges are between 40 and 75 minutes away.

There are many Izaak Walton League locations... members only.
Range 82 in Midland is pretty quiet. Also members only.
The Cove Campground toward Winchester has a nice outdoor range.
There is 340 Defense. I have never been there, but hear they are ok.

The best outdoor range I have been to is an hour and 15 minutes away in WV, right on the state line. Its called Peacemaker Range They can accommodate just about anything you want to do.

As far as stuff to do, there are skeet ranges at some of the Izaak Walton League locations. USPSA also does a ton of outdoor competitions and training at outdoor ranges as well. Then, of course... there is IDPA events.

Welcome to the area! Check out fair fax rod and gun club. They offer events to the public that are decently priced, but it is expensive to become a member.

http://www.fxrgc.org

They have a 22 shoot coming up in March. Most if not all the events are outdoor.

:welcome: I know what you are saying about shooting indoors. I've only shot at indoor ranges a few times. Never had a bad experience but , can't stand having someone looking over my shoulder. I have a range on my property in Dinwiddie. It's nice to be able to shoot any time I want and don't have to watch the clock. We have had several forum meet and greets and have friends over to shoot quite a bit. :pistol:
