Right. Each one of the ones i had before the boating incident was set up for a specific purpose.

I just got my first AR-15! Armalite M15, no accessories! The guy I bought it from said, "The AR-15 is like a Barbie Doll!" He's right! I'm excited to start accessorizing!
So, first question - Red Dot or traditional scope? It won't be a hunting rifle. House is surrounded by trees and only have about 30 - 60 yards to get off a shot that has a realistic probability of hitting the mark.
2nd question - Ammo. Any recommendations?

All I use is PMC and Federal Lake City 5.56. 55 grain for indoor ranges and green tips for outdoor stuff.
If you are shooting short distance (under 300 yards) a red dot will be good... just be sure the dot is 3 MOA or less. I'm using the Vortex Venom on my 300 Blackout and A2 sights on my M4 clone.

I put the new (ish) Vortex SPARC-AR. It is awesome and for the money there is nothing else even close. They are only 199.99. Palmetto State Armory online often has the SPARC bundled with 10 pmags for 199.99. Basically 10 free mags.
For ammo i run almost any 55 grain .223 or 5.56. I stay away from green tip because i can't use it any place i shoot.

Yea.. its tough to find somewhere to use green tips. The range owners get pretty mad when we poke holes in the lead traps. LOL

Guys, I'm ready to convert. Going from AK to AR.
Given the political climate in Virginia, I want to buy these days an AR, probably 15.
Can you recommend me something good? I'm picky, I like quality and precision. Preferably under 1K.
Also, do you know who has a Sig X-Five in stock?
Thanks!

My opinion... best bang for SIG M400, $800. Not dust cover or forward assist... MP15 Sport for $500... with dust cover and forward assist MP15 for $650. An actual Armalite AR15 M4 is great at $800.
Stay away from Panther Arms / DPMS.

Is the dust cover a big deal? can be added after that?
How about the forward assist? I'm a Sig fan, it looks nice.

Note sure where you are located but if you go the Dulles show this weekend there are thousands of excellent rifles to choose from. There are a ton of guys there building custom rifles that will be better than an off the shelf S&W.

Yes, I will be there. However, my very limited AR experience is making it hard for me to choose a good one.

The Armalite I just picked up was BNIB and never had a round through it. Just happened to be looking through the Valley Trader and saw the ad. Got it for $595. Sent the serial number to Armalite to find out the year it was manufactured. Haven't heard back yet. Rural King has this gun advertised for $709. I think I got a pretty good deal on it.
