VA Election/Candidates

Post by CaptainMorgan »

I'm a non voting carpet bagger (a LA resident). I've started seeing the political ads for the upcoming election and someone else posted a thread on a candidate, so with that said, who do you like (pick your office) and why?
Info on gubernatorial candidates here: https://ballotpedia.org/Virginia_gubern ... tion,_2017

I'll just focus on the Governor position:
Republicans: Ed GIllespie has the name recognition and political mojo, but if you're anti-establishment, he was a GWB advisor and Romney supporter (maybe a never-Trumper, I don't know). Corey Stewart seems like the anti-establishment candidate. Pro Trump but was fired from the campaign for being in a protest outside the RNC.

The Dems have the Lt. Gov (Northam) and Periello. Northam may be alright, but he's a Dem and I trust them less than Republicans. Periello has an interesting background, but if you've seen his commercial, you know that he's the gun-grabbing social justice warrior and will probably be doing campaign stops wearing pajamas and a pu*&y hat before the end of the campaign.

That's my take and I don't have a dog in this fight since I'm not a resident. If I was a Dem, that wouldn't matter, of course ("vote early, vote often").

Yes, Corey Stewart attended Lobby Day with the VCDL Jan 16, 2017.

I don't know what is most important to you Dem vs. Repub. or pro-gun vs. anti., but this site shows that the polls are showing Ed Gillespie leads the other Republican possibilities (with 50% or more undecided).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia_ ... tion,_2017

It also shows that if the race becomes Gillespie vs. Northam that Gillespie is more likely to win.

Bear in mind that turnout at the primary predicted the eventual outcome of the last presidential election. More Republicans hit the polls during the primaries which translated to an 85% probability that Trump would win. The statistician that voiced that was considered a "wing-nut" and you know how that turned out.

I exercise my right to vote every chance I can.

At a first look, Corey Stewart is like Trump, and Ed Gilespie is like Romney.
As the politics gets more tribal, partisan and polarized, I guess people will prefer Stewart.

One poll has Corey Stewart ahead of Gillespie.

Quick and simple

Virginians please don't elect for Governor another gun-grabber like you did the last time.
I noticed in the 2016 presidential election ya'll (majority) voted for gun-grabbing commie Clinton.

I would hate to have to move from my 2nd home in your lovely state farther south. I'm on the board with NC as it is.

The numbers are not good. 450K dems vs 350K repubs.

Yeah, this is becoming the tale of two states. It's interesting to see the big wins Gillespie got in NoVa and Tidewater compared to how the rest of the state voted. I admit, I've had my eye on NC and SC and will probably be down there before my days on this planet are through.

If you leave VA because of anti-gun sentiment, it's not likely to help to go to NC. Go on a little further south to SC. Only trouble with SC is they've got no mountains.

I'm originally from NY (home of all the liberal gun-grabbing cancerous BS). I bought my 2nd home in VA because NY banned my rights to defend myself and home by enacting NY un-SAFE act. Basically banning most effective firearms. I do love it in the south. The people are good. And I still have much more freedom on my VA property than I do in NY. Politically I can see the encroachment of modern day liberal BS moving south. First Delaware then Maryland now in Virginia. A line must be DRAWN !!

We just need to grab a hold of Arlington County on the western side, and tip it towards the east until all those Democrats who don't consider Virginia their home flow into DC.

Isn't it funny how much the people that hate where they live move somewhere else and try to make it exactly the same? DC/NY folks moving to Virginia, folks from theocracies moving to the US, etc....

Agreed some people say they hate the place they leave from and try to make the new home the same as old.
That's not me. I've always been a country mouse. I hate NYC and lower NY. Upper NY is good. It's the liberals up here that make this place into a cesspool.
These are the things that draws me from NY:
- Your property isn't your property. You need a permit to do any improvements or addition to your home where I live. And in NY anyone can walk on to your property a take whatever they want. I believe in the south most people respect others property (land).
- Taxes, of course. You pay 7x the amount in taxes for a .21 acre of land
- No Pot Holes.
.... ect 100's more reasons
