Good guys with guns...

So I'm kinda in a weird debate with a friend that started by discussing the illuminati trilogy by wilson. Anyhow my friend asked if there were any incidents of good guys using assault rifles in a productive manner. "good guys" as in not leo or active duty, just your average joe with an assault rifle. I know of numerous incidents where people with CCP, or just ready access to a hand gun, prevented/mitigated harm to others. I could think of no such stories assault rifle related and figured this place with its wealth of knowledge would be the best place to ask. I would think there simply have to be a few such cases. Since the government considers the garands in korea assault weapons you can as well for such incidents, not just ar platforms. Hopefully I posted this in the correct sub forum.
and no, my friend does not consider my use of an ar-10 on squirrels that keep chewing my house wiring as "productive".

AR15s and other tactical rifles and carbines are usually kept in vehicles and at home. When an active shooter situation occurs you normally try to get out of the kill zone. By the time you do get to your tactical rifle chances are that the local police will be arriving and they will not allow you back into the kill zone. The only possible chance to employ a tactical rifle is a home invasion should you be at home and can get access to it. The average person will not be carrying a tactical rifle at work or to the movies, or grocery store but may have access to a personal handgun. I am a police officer and I don't even keep a tactical rifle in my vehicle. I'm too afraid someone will break into my truck, find it and steal it. Don't laugh there have been many reports of such thefts from many vehicles belonging to police officers, the most embarrassing are the ones stolen out of FBI and other federal vehicles.

That's kinda what I figured the normal case would be but isn't there a single reported instance? Like an old soldier grabbed his garand off the wall and shot a bear chasing his grandson? If iI can't find a single example I lose the argument lol. And I definitely respect your wisdom about keeping stuff in a vehicle. Stuff can get hectic for a leo on occasion. In gainesville florida during a manhunt a police car was parked in a church parking lot and apparently left there for a few years. The church thought it was a deterrent so never thought to say anything about it.

If not, look up the Battle of Athens Tennessee.

Mainstream media tends to overlook such details, but there are articles available. Search LA riots Korean store owners.

Check the NRA ARMED CITIZEN section, they have pages, and pages of incidents like that.

I seem to recall an incident, that was posted here at VGOF some time ago, in which a boy, who was home alone with his little sister, used such a rifle to protect the homestead against some invading force.
I don't recall the State in which that incident happened, though.

The first think that comes to mind for me is the incident in Oklahoma where a Muslim terrorist started beheading people at his former place of employment because they refused to convert to Islam. The CEO of company ran to his truck, got his AR variant, and stopped the terrorist.

Thanks all. Once again you have been able to answer my questions, and this one wasn't even about an obscure bullet caliber lol

LA riots. Much of the city burned/looted - except the areas where the Americans of Korean descent lived/worked.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1992_Los_Angeles_riots
They protected their families and property with their long guns and the rioters (wisely) stayed away from those areas. Lots of pics, notice which areas are being looted/burned and which are peaceful.
