Body Cameras

Post by SHMIV »

Does anyone know of a body cam that has Bluetooth capabilities?

What I am looking for is a camera that will automatically send video to a smartphone via Bluetooth, and then an app on the phone would automatically upload to cloud storage, or something of that nature.

If I could find other cameras, such as dashcams, etc., that do similar things, that would be useful.

Not sure if the Go Pro cameras have that capability but you are talking about an enormous amount of data transfer over Bluetooth.

That sort of Bluetooth transfer would kill a cell phone battery very fast. Let alone the camera battery.

iON makes a few body cameras like this but the video quality is somewhat poor. As far as automatic uploads, you'll have to investigate the features to see if it meets your requirements.

As far as the phone's battery life goes, an external battery pack will help.

Thank you, Gentlemen.

I'm asking for a friend of mine. The cameras are for her business, and recent events have suggested that increased surveillance on the property would be highly prudent.

There's a particular reason that I was asking about automatic upload of video to an off site storage, but it wouldn't be prudent to discuss it on the Internet, at this time.

if this is at a fixed place of business, and you've got broadband, then the calculus changes quite a bit. Originally I thought you were looking for something to have out away from home base, and needed cellular upload.

You can get SD cards that are Wi-Fi enabled. That may suggest some interesting options.

I was completely unaware of the WiFi SD cards. I appreciate the heads up.

@Jdonovan, yes, we are talking about a fixed location, but internet options are limited, due to rural location. Also, we are talking about a property size of several acres.

I wish that I felt more comfortable discussing specifics, but the nature of the thing being what it is, I really can't.

Well maybe this will help some. If you have a large area, and provisions for an external antenna located up within line of sight of the cameras, then wifi signals will travel quite a bit farther than many people think. I have setup some long distance specific links using old school 802.11 B equipment without amplification and managed connections over 20 miles. Therefore I would believe if you had a decent stick at a central location, it may be quite feasible to have decent coverage of the area for the cameras, record to an on-site DVR, then upload to an off site backup storage service, cloud, or even another privately owned physical location.

Hope that's not too confusing, and I would be happy to chat about it off-line with you if you need some more specific pointers.

If it doesn't have to be a body camera, then I can suggest a camera that I've actually used before.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01E0TRQPS/

I use these as motion detection cameras connected to 802.11N wi-fi. The video (or still pics) will automatically upload to secure FTP server as MP4 files. The frame rate, bit rate, resolution, etc is programmable to suit your needs. It also takes a 64Gb micro SD card for local storage. It has a built-in microphone that can also be a trigger device instead of motion. It can even send emails for alarm events.

And it will also connect to ethernet if wireless isn't available.
