Baretta 92F
My closest and best friend picked up one of these today. I ought to be jealous, I guess. Maybe he'll let me shoot it.

Gun-crazy? Me? I'd say the gun-crazy ones are the ones that don’t HAVE one.

Nothing wrong with Beretta pistols as far as I'm concerned. They are good enough for our armed forces.
So there's that.
So there's that.

We have a 25th Anniversary edition. Notice I said "we".

There is nothing to be jealous of. You are used to 1911s, that Beretta was as big as a 1911 and wider in the grip. For something that was adopted with one of the reasons being easier for women to use it missed the mark. It does fire 9MM, which made us common with the rest of NATO. The safety/decocker is in an awkward location, and the double action pull on the first shot after it has been decocked feels long heavy and very creepy compared to the single action follow on shots.
Admittedly I believe the bar is always set by the first of anything you use and everything else is compared to that bar. For me as military pistol, it was an M1911 manufactured in 1918 with a 6 digit serial number that had probably been rebuilt 3 or 4 times by the time it was "mine" 60+ years later for a few years. I would still feel more comfortable carrying a M1911 with a magazine in the pistol and an empty chamber, drawing and racking the slide (a gross motor skill) versus carrying a M9 with a round in the chamber decocked, drawing and flipping the slide mounted safety off ( a fine motor skill).
Now offer me the more compact M11 (a Sig P228), which does not have a true safety, just a decocker with a heavier double action first pull and that would be a much tougher choice. It is not that much smaller a pistol, but every bit as accurate as the bigger Beretta with better ergonomics.

You just have to ask yourself, is he telling you the truth based on knowledge and experience or spreading internet myths?

A friend of mine has one of those Berettas. Another friend of mine has a knock-off version. I've fired the knock-off; it was nice, except for the stove pipe every other shot. I assume that the actual Beretta performs a little better than that.
Also, I once rode to California in Chevy's version of the Beretta.

My good neighbor had a 96. I'm not sure of the rationale for the decocker safety, but the firearm did function well enough.

Re: Baretta 92F
I have an '89 92FA. I love it. It shoots smooth and accurate. It's a range gun not a carry one so I'm not concerned with the deco let/safety Ina carry situation. The only think I don't like is it's so dirty to shoot because it's so open. There's a lot of blow back when the slide cycles. Defiantly wouldn't sell it. It's a keeper.

I have a S&W 1911, but that does not detract from our Beretta. Smooth action and accurate. My 25th Ann is an M9 version with wooden grips. You WOULD be jealous.; All joking aside it is a beautiful gun.

Re: Baretta 92F
Yep, my first 2 thoughts when I picked it up were (1) if it's that big and heavy and only fires 9mm it ought to be pretty accurate - more like plinking with a .22 than blasting away with a .45ACP, and (2) that grip is just a little too fat for comfort even for my big fat hands. I've never fired one. But I have fired a Taurus 9mm and a .50AE Desert Eagle with the top of the slide carved out like that.

Ah, didn't see the picture from my cell phone. This looks like a 25th Anniversary model too. My grips are a smooth burled walnut. Took a pic but don't see how to upload.
