Sights are how much higher than the muzzle? He probably still thinks it was poor aim on his part.

I saw something similar once, someone benched a scoped rifle across the bed of a pickup. Line of sight was good, but put the round through the opposite side of the bed.

Is it the one where the guy with the mutant AR/AK shoots the hood of his truck?
Up close there can be things in the line of sight/line of fire that you can't see in the scope. Just like you can't see the front sight base on an AR15 (I have 3X9's on two 20" flat tops and a 4X on a 16" carbine and can't see the front sight base on any of them).
One time, at Black Creek Range, I had clipped my cellphone to the outside of my range bag so I could hear it if my wife called me. I had stapled up some targets and was working my way across them (shooting different loads, adjusting the scope, having fun) left to right. When I got to the target on the far left and let the first shot go I heard my son "crowing" behind me about something being COOL!!!!. He was getting his phone out and taking pictures and hollering about how cool it looked and how he was going to show his friends and I had no clue what he was talking about. I finally got him to slow down and explain and he pointed at my range bag. Only part of the phone was still clipped to the bag. The rest was in pieces spread out in front of the bench towards the target line. Not a mark on the range bag.
One phone down. I had a spare at the house. I now put my range bag on the ground beside the table.

The lack of seeing the front sight of an AR has to do with the optic's magnification and the "bending of light", If you put a 1X, maybe even up to a 2.5X optic you will see the front sight.
