Saturday Night Special

Post by SHMIV »

I've done a little sitting, lately. Guess it's that time of year. That sort of thing leads to random Google searches of trivial things and absurd word combinations.

Which is how I happened upon this write up of a Raven Arms .25:

http://www.notpurfect.com/main/raven.html

It includes a bit of history on cheaply made American firearms, and justifies their existence.

I didn't go back and fact check the author; TBH is awake and can't stand more than 3 minutes without speaking. Makes research difficult.

I've had about a half dozen .25 and .32 Saturday Night Specials and still have 2 or 3 ...Don't remember any being a Raven . I have to say most were APOS.

I was completely clueless to the existence of Raven and the other Ring of Fire companies, until my mother expressed an interest in obtaining her CHP. I found a Raven for her, just so she'd have something to keep her interest up and keep her motivated. My sister's father in law caught wind of it, and said, "You don't want that; take this Jimenez, instead." I'm not sure if he realized that they may as well be the same company.

I told Mom to take them both; the price was right. Mom said that she never realized how badly she wanted a gun, until people started giving them to her, lol.

From what I've read, Raven, Bryco, et al., are like the Yugo automobile. They get a lot of bad press. If you treat them like disposable items, they won't last long.

I think they have a purpose. I can remember living off of $450-600 a month, and I probably would have bought one at the time, had I run across one. As it was, I bought a Heritage Arms .22, SA revolver for about $150, and carried that, openly, in one of those cheap Walmart holsters that everyone loves to hate. It's what I could afford, at the time. And, I still had to borrow money to get it.

Reminds me of an elderly man I heard talking about the possibility of his wife passing........ when he was asked, What will you do if she passes..? His reply, "Finally get some peace & quiet" :hysterical: This was a conversation overheard in an insurance office about 20yrs ago..... still cracks me up though.

Man does that bring back memories. Years ago I would visit a local gun shop (no longer in business) and the owner would allow me behind the counter to help out from time to time. He had a couple Ravens and a couple Jennings in his counter. You would be surprised how many first time buyers would take a serious look at them. Most were women who really didn't want to hurt someone. When I was there I tried to steer them to something more potent like a small 38 Special. One college student brought his girl friend in looking for a defensive gun for her. Instead of a Raven or a Jennings she walked out with a nice S&W 38 Special. The Ravens and Jennings were going for about $75 - $90 but the S&W went for about $225. She appreciated the quality of the S&W over her other options. BTW she did the paperwork and paid for it not her boy friend.
