Wow!!! More than 10 seconds of flight time!
Published on Mar 25, 2016

On November 22nd, Jim Spinella hit a 36” plate at 4210 yards with a HCR 375 CheyTac. That is 2.4 miles!

Over the past few years, Hill Country Rifles has been doing some very long range shooting with friend and customer, Jim Spinella.

Spinella hit a 36” plate at 3600 yards, 3800 yards, and on November 22nd, he hit a 36” plate at 4210 yards.

Each shot involved a new rifle build by HCR, all in 375 Cheytac. New lessons were learned and the rifles evolved into lighter, more useful designs.

One of the most interesting aspects to these shots is the engineering of custom mounts to avoid running out of scope adjustment. A 230 minute of angle (MOA) rail was machined for a 20 MOA Nightforce Unimount for a total of 250 MOA.

The Nightforce Beast scope also allows 34.9 MILS of additional come-up. That internal adjustment range is extremely important for this kind of shooting.

What is the MOA of their scope? I don't think I can see 2.4 miles.

At 4210 yards one minute of arc is 44.09 inches.
That 36" target was 49 SECONDS of arc or 0.82 Minutes of arc.

I have enough problems hitting a ~1.5mm "10 dot" shooting .22lr, 50 yd., benchrest.

Right? Its mind blowing to think about it. They said it was like trying to hit the top of a pencil point at 100 yards as far as what you can see.

The shot is one heck of a shot, I don't care whether it was one round or twelve. As far as the optics go, it had to be a relatively cool day for the mirage to be as minimal as possible. As for the scope itself, A Nightforce B.E.A.S.T. is 5 to 25 variable power with a 34 MM tube and a 56 MM objective lens which would definitely help with light transmission.

To put what he saw in perspective with that scope, 4210 /25 = 168.4 yards. Assuming it is like many scopes, and the 25 is a hair more or less than 25, make the math easy and round it to 21X and what he saw would look like a 36 inch target at 200 yards with no magnification. So what he was using and what he had to shoot at made the shot possible. Depending on terrain, he is going to have to deal with 2+miles of mirage, and the wind is not going to sit still for that kind of distance, so that call has to be spot on. The other thing with using huge magnification is the smaller field of view in the scope itself, finding and getting on the target would be more work than you think. I think a good analogy, is it would be more like trying to find that 36 inch target at 200 yards while looking through a straw.
