The situation is more proof positive that finger discipline is the only thing that will cause a negligent discharge. Guy was on a bike with his back to the LEO on a routine traffic stop. No need for the gun to be out, never mind finger in the trigger.

Practice folks. You don't want to be on either end of this transaction.

Following a high-speed chase, an Eden Praire police officer accidentally discharged his firearm and shot a suspect in the arm. After the suspect slowed down and pulled over the officer exited his vehicle with weapon drawn. You can hear the gunshot before the officer can finish the phrase “Put your hands where I can see them!” The officer immediately curses, and realizes he made a mistake attributed to a “high stress” situation. The biker begins to panic and pleads for help while the officer calls in an ambulance.

What an idiot. He should be fired, blacklisted from police work forever, and do some time, and the city owes MAJOR dollars to the victim.

Now, did he try to give the victim a ticket anyway?

That just scares the hell out of me.

The rider was convicted of of a gross misdemeanor for fleeing an officer.
Cop blamed "muscle memory" and is back on the beat but facing a civil lawsuit.

I didn't want to attack the officer, not knowing the story and hearing all the anti-cop stuff. Last thing I want to look like is I'm bashing cops. My intent to to highlight the importance of training. However, I got to call BS based on that story.

Here is my position... Anyone ever ride a bike without a helmet? For most people, mirrors are next to worthless on a bike. Rolling at 100+ on a bike with no helmet, no safety glasses.... kid likely have the cop behind him for a mile or two and didn't even know it. I would guess that instead of reckless based on speed, they charged him with fleeing and eluding to use "fleeing felon" rules to justify the shooting.

Bottom line... that cop got away with shooting an unarmed man how was surrendering in the back. The kid will likely never see a dime due to "fleeing felon" laws.

And of all things, he got away with it by blaming he was too well trained. Maybe we need to start a national movement to get rid of the training requirement to get a CHP. We can site this case to prove that training is actually a bad thing that will make us accidentally shoot someone when we didn't want to. Honest you Honor... it was all the training that made the gun go off.

Might have been the gun - - sorta. Odds are that dumbass was carrying a Glock. No safety worthy of the name on a Glock. Of course, if he'd HAD a positive safety he'd probably already have thumbed it off; but still, I think the "safety" setup on a Glock makes poor trigger and muzzle discipline more likely to cause an ND and therefore makes an idiot a lot more dangerous. Didn't look like they were rolling at 100mph in the dash cam vid. Just because the cop sped up to a 100 mph to catch up to him from a dead stop doesn't mean the kid on the crotch rocket was doing 100 or higher. Again, definitely wasn't doing a 100 in the video.

Unrelated but to Marc's question..... ever ride without a helmet...? Yup. for many years, I lived in a state without a helmet requirement for riders 18 or over. I didn't wear one. I will say this though.... at 100 mph or higher, mirrors do become pretty worthless on plenty of scoots. Good point imo. Pretty sure evading police requires intent to evade. I was charged with evading once as a teenager. I was NOT convicted of it. I had no intent to evade, & honestly didn't know I was being pursued, until I came to a stop & deputy dog came flying in with a bad attitude

As far as the actual shooting..... wow. I would be disappointed for the kid if he loses his case. If the officer was a better shot, this kid would be dead. He's lucky to have only sustained minimal injuries. Looked pretty crazy on the dashcam...... get pulled over, cop gets out & immediately, bam bam.. two shots..!! Regardless of whether it was intentional or not..... pretty fk'd up situation. The cop seemed remorseful but, I would think unintentionally firing two shots would have to be considered gross negligence. Adrenalin or not....that really is terrible, at least in my opinion.

Dorm, I hate to say this, but that post is utter nonsense except for the part about thumbing off a "positive" safety while drawing. Once you draw your weapon, the only safety left is the one between your ears - regardless of the type of pistol.

If that was muscle memory from training...they been training all wrong.

In a perfect world, proper trigger and muzzle discipline would make this a non-issue. But whether we like it or not, idiots sometimes get ahold of guns. An idiot with a Glock-type safety is at least a slightly more dangerous idiot.

The answer to all of this was in the officer's statement "when my hands met, the gun fired..."etc.

My bet is - The right hand drew the weapon. As the left hand was coming up to assume the 2 handed grip, he was probably watching the suspect. The left hand, instead of wrapping around the shooting hand fingers, curled prematurely and he struck the trigger with a finger from the left hand. The second shot was probably a bump fire from the first' shot's recoil.

Seen it before. Tragic case though, and luckily the man survived. The officer didn't get a good grip on the pistol, probably due to the adrenaline. It was a mistake for sure, and one that he realized.

If that is the case, two handed grips should be abandoned.

In this case your opinion sucks and shows a lack of understanding of the system. If it's so bad then why have most of the manufacturers adopted it? [Rifles too.]
