Since reverse gear in a car's transmission is LOWER than low gear it was obvious to me that something about the video was faked. I didn't expect it to be the trailer.
Driving that speed in reverse, BTW, would probably red line the engine of the car.

BTW it's easier to BACK up a steep hill than to go forward in low because of the gearing difference.

And all this time I thought reverse was a tad lower ratio...higher gear.

As I remember, in Europe it's illegal to back up more than 50 meters. But a cool promo.

You most certainly are not backing a single axle trailer of that size, that fast, around curves that sharp. I own a utility trailer that size. Those things react down right quick. Incidentally, I don't know that I would use a vehicle of that size to pull a trailer that size. I have serious doubts about the engines capabilities, as well as the capabilities of the suspension.

Also, if you can't back that trailer without help from a computer, perhaps you should find an empty parking lot and practice your backing skills. That's worse than those self parking cars. At what point are we expected to have everything done for us? This is getting beyond absurd.

So, I had to check. VW, for the most part, is a lower gear in reverse...not all, but way more. Perhaps kelu's post explains that. Toyoya has a healthy sample of higher and lower gearing for reverse. Having read the specs for a few American cars, I had assumed that all vehicles were higher gear in reverse since there was only the one reverse gear.

There was something that I either drove or rode in that had a reverse hi and reverse lo. I wish that I was able to remember what it was.

Mercedes has a low and high reverse. The high gear is for winter driving...less torque/less slip. Forward travel starts in second gear in that mode for the same reason.

I hate small trailers for that reason. Way to reactive.

Once I got into trailers with hitching points above the axle, I'm now spoiled by how well a trailer can handle compared to how bumper pull trailers behave. My class 5 is so much a step up from pickup based tow rigs.

some day I need some time in a class 8... Hmm if I only knew someone with one.

It might have been a truck that I drove that had 2 reverse gears, probably for winter conditions.

My current truck, a Volvo, has N1 and N2, which I find odd.

@Jdonovan; If I actually owned my class 8 truck, I'd gladly let you try it out. I am a company driver, however. It's the only way to make any money at it. Owner operaters love to brag about the $200,000 they made last year, but never mention the $175,000 dollars in expenses.

Also, my truck doesn't look anywhere near as cool or tough looking as a classic Pete. It looks more like the bastard love child of a Prius and a Dustbuster.

I've been thinking about sending myself to CDL school. Just hard to fork out that kind of cash ($6,000) for something that isn't my profession. I don't legally need a cdl for what I'm moving, but I would like to get some of the knowledge via a classroom/book/instructor vs having to learn it the hard way on the road.

Heh. Those schools don't teach you much.

My first day at the school, though, I was in the drivers seat, piloting that massive vehicle through traffic.

Pretty much, they just get you to a point where you can drive a big circle without hitting anything, then prove that you can back around some traffic cones.

When I got to driving in real world application, I found myself completely unprepared. Fortunately for my trainer, when I got on his truck, I already had a very low opinion off government mandated licensing classes, so I suffered no delusions that I knew what I was doing. That made his job SOOO much easier. Normally, guys come straight out of school under the impression that a CDL means that you have nothing else to learn about the subject.

I stand corrected. Sort of.
Back when I was learning to drive, as far as I know, all American manual car transmissions had a reverse gear that was lower (more torque/less speed) than forward low.

Of course, that was just a couple years after Ford quit selling the Edsel.

Who gives a crap about the gearing? That's pretty damn clever!

Reminds me of that old Burt Reynolds movie "Hooper" .....I think it was a Chevy pickup mounted backwards on the chassis going about 70 mph.
