Lookie what I got today...a NanoVault NV300. What is most awesome is between finding it at HomeDepot.com, an old gift card with 17+ $$$ on it and free shipping. Cost me about $7 and change delivered How cool is that?

I believe for the money $23.79 and free shipping I will order another to carry ammo when crossing state lines that are not friendly.

That's pretty good for the price.

The chain truck stops have locking gun boxes in the same price range. The things satisfy legal requirements, I guess, but they are junk. I could get into the truck stop boxes with a box cutter; they're made of paper board. Stiff paper board, but still paper board.

I've got several of those ....Very handy and lots of uses !

Nice score! I have one in my Jeep. Its a very handy lock box. Had it for almost 5 years now and not a lick of trouble.

I have one of the keyed variety. I use it when we travel. Comes in handy, nice and compact.

According to the NanoVault website the NV200 and NV300 are thicker metal than the NV100...and I have not found the NV100 cheaper either. And I like the idea of the combination rather than a key. You forget or lose the key and it might be a while before you hold your piece again.

It is pretty cool and heavy duty.

I can pick a lock; barring that, I can drill out a lock cylinder. Creating a combination that TBH and I are both likely to remember 6-8 weeks afterwards.... I dunno...

Really, though, I could make do with either. Both keyed and combo have drawbacks and advantages.

Some broke out of Alcatraz so yes, I'm sure they can break into a small sheet metal vault. Just keeps the semi-honest honest.

Oh, absolutely, I hear ya. I wasn't putting down your purchase; rather, I was commenting on keyed lock vs. combo lock.

For the purpose of legality, what you have will work fine. And, it appears to be of higher quality than some others that I've seen at the same price (if not a few dollars higher). As far as I can tell, you did pretty good.

It was pointed out to me on a forum somewhere that the pivot wire of the hinge can be removed with a small punch and a pair of pliers.
I suggest applying a VERY small amount of super glue to one end of that wire if this concerns you.
Do I have to tell you NOT to freeze up the hinge?

Last time I got two NV300s for under $18 each.

As far as I'm concerned they are only good to prevent a smash and grab of my gun out of my vehicle when I'm in a place I HAVE to be in without my EDC.

Yeah, they're pretty handy. I've had the keyed version for several years and use it when I travel through hostile territory. Down to one key. Maybe I should practice my lock-picking?

You can also use a sharp punch to pin the hinge pin in place at both ends. Just be sure that both hinges are on either the base or lid.

I thought of that and that's why I said ONE end.
A close up view of the NV300 (or the others) will show that the two halves of the clamshell are identical (until the slot is cut and side pieces welded). That means that the hinge end tabs are on opposite shell halves so DON'T prick punch the both end tabs. Punch the end tab one side and the second tab on the other.

This makes A LOT more sense when you have the safe in your hands.

As the OP said, this is just to meet legal requirements. If I had a pair of pliers I would cut the cable and open the thing at my leisure...that metal ledge near the pivot is not called a wire cutter but it will, if the ledges slide against each other, shear wire or softer cable.
