Anyone trying to decide whether to buy an AK or AR might want to read this. It will explain what the superior weapon is, and if nothing else it's good for a laugh.

ah, what a great debate.
i'll have to say AK. if 8 year old somalian kids on cocaine can operate them, so can you! reliability is unparalelled. also, it feels like a real rifle, not a toy. the AK is not a distance gun, but tell me how many people on this forum routinely shoot over 100yd anyway. i can hit small clay birdies at 100yds with mine no problem, and that's enough for me.
as i recall, the importation of AK parts kits has been haulted since 2008. that means kits will only go up in value and people will still want AKs, so it looks like it'd be good from an investment point of view. cheap WASR10s were 379 at the chantilly gun show in october, now they're 650. if there aren't any more kits floating onto our shores, i expect prices to go even higher. abuse it. leave it in the mud, don't clean it. the thing will still function. the same can't be said fo ARs that aren't cleaned.
i'm not too keen on the AR. i don't like guns that have a button for when not if a round gets stuck. there are kits to make ARs reliable, putting a gas piston system in it like of an AK, but that's a few hundred bucks right there.

Flowmaster, did you follow the link and read the comparison? It comes to a completely different conclusion, you have to read it to see though.

I don't know, I trusted my M-16 for many years. My whole entire life the AK was a good weapon but it was theirs, you know the enemies. It just wasn't American, not to say it's not a good weapon. Maybe it's just me, I wouldn't mind owning an AK but I personally would have to own something off of the AR design first.

What we really need is a KR15.5. i.e. the best of both rifles.

OHHH so true
I have had them all and my M44 Mosin is great. and that 4' flame that comes out of the barrel each time I pull the trigger is awesome and really gets people's attention.
They all have thier + & - but I like the AR the best. .308 AR10. and now the 6.5mm Grendel is awesome.

Close Combat for me = AK
300 Yard Shots for me = AR

It can go either way. GET BOTH!

i shot both the AK and AR
i think AR is better cause of less recoil and faster recovery
but i went with a AK cause its more fun with a kick
so its really up to you on what your looking at

Think they call that an M-14, I'll take that over the AR or Ak any day

Someone traded in a very nice French MAS 49/56 .308 Semi-Auto Rifle at Greentop. I handled it last week. May still be there.

Buddy of mine that was a Ranger(just got out after 8 ) went through some classes in which a very similar topic was brought up. They put both rifles thru a series of test involving sand(since they were in the sandbox), submersion, etc...
I can't remember if they were using the HK 416 or not as I know he had one at some point and that would be a little different from the standard AR.
Basically the results were along the lines of if the AR was maintained it would run well, as would the AK but it did not need as much attention to maintenance. They both failed some of the test, but not the same ones if I remember correct, but in the end he said he would stick with his AR. They both performed about equal with the accuracy of the the AR variant edging out the AK. This was about a year or so ago.
Take it how ever, but it was a little surprising for me as in years past he liked the AKs a lot and even thought he still owns one his go to is an AR according to him(of course his training could have a little to do with that to so....).

Ak's will definitely take a beating and keep on ticking. The ARs are getting better though with chrome chambers and barrels. IMO though you still cant bury a newer AR in sand and trust it to fire just by shaking it off.

I've been on the wrong end of AK's, I've seen AK's pulled from the mud and shoot. I've been around AR's when they were not so good, tempermential. I still just do not like an AK, it's just personal ok? Give me a newer AR anyday 100% better.
BUt in the real world give me my bolt action w/aside order of 1911A1 and a M-14. That's how I did and still do get it do?

Well, if you're talking a bolt action over an AR or AK - make mine a heavy barreled 700 in 300 winchester magnum with a nice clear scope. Please dont forget to ask the BG to be far away.
