Yeah, that thought occurred to me. I also wondered about the rope. Mooring lines are taken aboard when the boat casts off, not left on the pier.

Im shocked that they surrendered their weapons, & boats to the Iranians & allowed themselves to be taken prisoner for a bit. Ridiculous imo. The photos of them disarmed, & in custody of Iran is disturbing imo.

This whole ordeal reeks of Shat, and we Americans under this administration(and any future extension of it) are Shat up the Estuary without a paddle.

Yes I don't understand :

1. How 2 heavily armed boats were captured without a round being fired.
2. How both boats lost communication with the Ship.
3. Why the working boat didn't go back to the ship for help. While the dead boat anchored. The working boat surely wasn't providing any kind of protection.

I was questioning many of the same things that you guys were. But, not being a military man, I figured that there was something that I missed.

Maybe I shouldn't have second-guessed myself.

I am not military, past or present. I could be told that firing on an Iranian vessel in Iranian waters might be construed as an act of war. I could be told that the second boat had a responsibility to stay with their partner boat. I could be told that the floor was too deep for anchorage. IF a ship could lose all communications I could see neither boat being able to overcome that obstacle.

No rope? No cordage? No straps? No webbing? No explosive charges for scuttling?

Some thoughts:

- It is possible that at least one boat broke down and that both boats lost situational awareness on where they were in the world.
- It is entirely possible that the boats were outside the territorial seas of Iran around Farsi Island and that the IRGCN f**ked with them anyway. The IRGCN are nautical a-holes.
- I've had this happen to me before, in 7m RHIBs in the middle of the North Atlantic. Not a lot of fun while you're waiting for you 509 ft. grey-hulled ride to pick you up.
- Open source reporting leads us to believe that they two boats were transiting from Kuwait to Bahrain. Not all that unheard of, but it seems like there would be a DDG or CG escorting just in case. Haven't read anything about it.

When something like this happens, it is very rarely a single-point failure. Many little things had to have gone wrong in order for this to happen ("Swiss Cheese" theory). Navy investigation has commenced. I'll wait for the report before I pass full judgement.

In the meantime, there should have never been any Sailor being recorded giving any apology. They all should have known better, not just the young idiot on TV.

It's not just my total lack of military experience that caused my hesitation in recognizing red flags, my only nautical experience is going out on the lake or the river on a friends little boat, for the purpose of drinking beer in a new setting. I know very little about boating, much less about nautical military stuff.

I hope when the election comes someone puts up a commercial with Hillary and Obama apologizing the Muslims, terrorists, Iran etc. Run it 24/7.

If anyone thinks that this was an accident, and the boat accidentally drifted there, they're crazy.
