I am looking for someplace in the Northern VA area to engrave my lower to meet Form 1 requirements.

This might (actually probably) sound totally weird but many years ago I researched having my 1911 personalized and I found that the young lady managing the Things Remembered kiosk at my local mall said she'd be quite happy to use her engraving machine to do the job and gave me the impression that she'd done it before.

I would guess that now they use computer controlled engraving machines to be able to engrave on curved or odd shaped surfaces so except for size problems I don't see how engraving a lower would be any different.

Stop by your local mall and ask, it can't hurt to ask.
I wouldn't advise bringing a complete long gun into the mall however.

My holstered 9mm is a different story.

US Tactical charges $100 per gun so Things Remembered is worth looking into.

I get the equipment is pricey but damn, its literally a few minutes work.

I've been contemplating what I want to do after I stop driving trucks. This thread just put another interest in my head.

Lmao... no; if I invest in franchises, it will be me franchising out a business that I own. I've looked into franchises, and none of them are worth the money or hassle to me.

Investing in engraving equipment, and taking the time to learn how to use it properly, on the other hand, strikes me as something worthwhile. Actually, it's something that I've wanted to do for myself, anyway. It didn't really occur to me that it could put a little extra coin in my pocket.

$100 to engrave, that seems a bit more expensive than I would have guessed.

eh... I use Photon Engraving in Manassas. After shopping around, I found that was the going rate for a lower. I just went with the closest place to me.

I tend to shy away from vertical market products/stores when there are generic products/stores that do the exact same thing without the hype.

Engraving is engraving. Charging an exorbitant amount just rankles my mind unless there is a valid reason for the extra cost.
Knowing where there is a clear area to do the engraving on a striped lower without having to ask the customer a bunch of question might make the extra cost worth it but I'd have to be convinced of that.

Kodak tried to sell me some Yellow plastic trays to develop photo prints in for about $5 apiece. I opted to buy Pyrex baking dishes that didn't stain for $2 apiece.

Quite a bit more than I expected but I guess its this area. I looked around to get a flash hider pinned and welded and the 2 places I checked with wanted over a hundred bucks...and that's after I had already drilled and pinned the FH. I mailed it to Adco in Ohio and even with shipping both ways I saved about $40.

I am seeing around $35 online for the engraving but I'd rather not ship NFA items so I'll prob suck it up and get the engraving done around here. I won't like it though.

I had two that needed to be done so I shipped them to Tar Heel State Firearms. Roundtrip shipping and the work was a hundred bucks for both of them.

They did a great job and I had them back in like a week.

This thread got me curious as to what the BATFE marking requirements are.
Not that I plan to build or manufacture a firearm.

From: ATF Guidebook - Importation & Verification of Firearms,Ammunition, and Implements of War
Under: MARKING REQUIREMENTS – FIREARMS (27 CFR 478.92)

For firearms manufactured or imported on and after January 30, 2002, the engraving,
casting, or stamping (impressing) of the serial number must be to a minimum depth
of .003 inch and in a print size no smaller than 1/16 inch

It goes on to list all the information that has to be included.

If in the Hampton Roads area, Demon Tactical does NFA engraving for $55.

Just got my lower back from THSF. 1/16th lettering in the trigger area. I am very happy with it. I wasn't crazy about the idea of shipping it, but it was no big deal.
