I don't think many gangbangers will lug this thing around

I just got this in an email.
I'd love to have one except for three things.
I don't have $7000 to spend right now.
I couldn't afford to feed it.
I would have to hire someone to carry it around for me.

It just occurred to me that this ad would probably cause most anti-gunners' heads to explode.

Why? It's only a 10-round magazine.

If it came with a 60 Rd. mag. and a Slidefire stock it would have "Marc Spaz" written all over it.

I really want a .50 BMG, but I would prefer a bolt gun over a semi. It would be fun do do a mag dump with that bad-boy though...

Bushmaster BA50. $5,300 or so a few years back. But to tell the truth, I'd rather have that Barrett for $6,999. Trouble is, you can't spend it but once.
Then, too, the muzzle blast (even with foam earplugs AND ear muff-type hearing protection) and the price of ammo DO argue for the bolt action over the semi-auto.

The thing to keep in mind about the Barret semi's is that most folks have found them to be not high precision rifles. And if you are going to feed them $3 surplus, you're probably looking at a 3-4+ MOA gun. Better ammo will get you down below 2, and a few people claim 1... but strangely they never seem to have target pictures. If I shot a super group I'd at least shoot the pic, if not save the target.
If you want to get better accuracy, you're going to have to hand load, or buy factory amax ammo... the factory ammo can run north of $6 PER ROUND (last I looked) ok, just looked $5/per, + shipping. Eeven if you reload the bare projectiles are more than $2 each, and the cartridge burns 200+ gr of powder per shot. A pound of powder is about 30 rounds.

That video makes shows that the Barrett doesn't make a BAR look like a pussycat, it makes the BAR look like a newborn kitten!
WOW!

I was looking at precision shooting at distance. The two choices I see are the .338 Lapua and the 50 BMG. I have fired both and they both seem to recoil about the same. I think I could do okay with either and would love to own either or both. The quality 338 is a touch cheaper than the 50 BMG, but not much. I don't know how much cost of ammo would really impact which route I go, but more so, the price and quality of the weapon.
My goal is to be able to hit a deer size target, able to get a soft target kill, at greater than 1000 yards. I have some friends that go to the Dakotas to hunt every year.. open plains deer. If you don't have something decent, you're not making the trip or dropping the deer if you do.

Not even close to the same recoil energy... the difference is one is in a 22-30lb package with a highly efficient muzzle break. The other is a 10lb package with a somewhat good break.
The hand loading is 1/2 to 1/3 the cost for the 338, and you can do it on non-specialty equipment.

step away from the x-box sniper_dude68
at 1000... a 12" vital zone... net-net that means moa, first shot, every time. near perfect wind dope, near perfect range read. Plus you are dealing with non-static targets, and a 1.3+ second flight time. 1 good step from the deer, and you'd miss the whole animal. If you could come up with that level of marksmanship repeatably you would be a national level competitive shooter and be winning events regularly.

Ah, didn't realize those rifles were so different. Those 2 are the only ones I've tried.
As far as the ranging goes... I have zero expectations of hitting at that range every time. I don't have that expectation at 100 yards. But, I have seen video of my friends ranging 1400 to 1600 yards on a buck laying in the grass and getting a kill shot.
I at least want to bring gear capable. A 308 won't cut it.

and if you want in even less expensive. I've got a rem 700 in 338 I'll part with for less than 1/2 that price.

Ironic that the most powerful gun would be a liberal's preferred gun:
- Cost prohibitive
- 10rd magazine
- Too big to conceal
- Ammo is super expensive
When they use the stupid argument "should people be able to purchase rocket launchers?" by their logic of making guns expensive to keep out of the hands of most people maybe their own answer should be "yes".
