I had an unfair advantage. In addition to being something of a logophile, I used to sail a little bit and have read many of the the sea adventures around such as Horatio Hornblower and the Jack Aubrey tales that gave rise to the movie "Master and Commander".

OK, the good Dr. was caught in a fabrication of word usage leading to my research of the phrase. The Aubrey/Maturin books are great entertainment...The Ionian Mission had me rolling.
