Good to see some four legged wildlife around here for a change. We have way too much of the two legged variety.

I see coyotes rather frequently. One was standing on the shoulder of the interstate, the other night.

Of course, I'm usually west of Arkansas when I see them.

Coyotes enjoy cats (there's got to be some locker room humor in that statement), so if you keep kitty's, you might want to keep them indoors, lest they become a midnight snack for ol' Wiley.

I love how there is zero fear. She looks about 25-30 lbs. I wonder where the rest of the pack is. I'm guessing she's the bait. LOL

I see several every week in Dinwiddie, some on our property and some when driving to get there. I've killed 4 there and 2 on surrounding properties. They never seem to be afraid of humans!

Maybe...

"A new species is evolving right before our eyes — an ultra-successful mix of wolves, coyotes and dogs.
...
Some scientists think the hybrid animal is able to adapt to city life — which neither coyotes or wolves have managed to do on their own — because its dog ancestry allows it to tolerate people and noise."

An old news item, perhaps as early as the '90s, described a Virginia man who was charged by the feds for killing a protected species (wolf) when he killed what he thought was a large male coyote. His lawyer somehow managed to get DNA tests done and the animal was a actually a mix of coyote and wolf, so the hunter was reportedly cleared.

I wasn't aware of the three way mix described here, but it makes sense. Have read that coywolves like domestic fowl, smaller dogs, cats and that some people think they could attack children - don't know of any documented attacks on people, but it seems inevitable if it is not already occurring.

Also we have the feds and some state governments who have contributed to the problem by reintroducing wolves and making them protected More 'gubmint' wisdom and waste of taxpayer's funds.

There is a guy in Fluvanna who has a 99% Silver Wolf that he got as a pup from Florida. That wolf is the friendliest, gentlest, most submissive big dog I've ever seen.
