1. Recap of Wednesday’s meeting of the McLean Citizens Association regarding NOVA Firearms
**************************************************************
Last night VCDL flooded the meeting of the McLean Citizens Association (MCA) board meeting, where the MCA was going to decide what to do, if anything, about NOVA Firearms moving their store near a k-12 school. A few parents, who clearly didn’t know anything at all about guns, were actually concerned about the gun store being near the school.
(If those parents would simply take about 20 minutes to go visit the gun store, they would find their fears are totally unfounded.)
Members wearing VCDL “Guns Save Lives” stickers vastly outnumbered the other side, who were sporting some small black-on-white stickers.
At the beginning of the meeting the board chairman told the attendees that the board was not taking any public input on the NOVA Firearms matter. He said the board would be discussing it that evening, which they did as the last item on their agenda.
AND THE ANTIS WERE THEIR USUAL SELF-OBSESSED, RUDE, CHILDISH SELVES.
The chairman had asked everyone to please be quiet as the board held its meeting.
While gun owners were respectfully silent, one of the antis yelled at the top of his lungs from the back of the room (paraphrasing): “This guy (pointing to someone in front of him) has TWO GUNS!!! Do you allow GUNS at your meetings!?! Officer - are GUNS LEGAL here?!!”
The room broke out in laughter! If I hadn’t been so polite and not wanting to take part in interrupting their meeting, I had wanted to say, “Will everyone who is carrying a gun please raise their hand?”
The police officer at the front of the room, who is there for all the MCA meetings, said it was perfectly legal. One of the board members applauded that.
The meeting continued until another self-important anti interrupted the meeting, first demanding in a loud voice that she be told details about a committee being created and then demanding that one of the board members who was speaking stand up and face the attendees so she could hear him! Excuse me, but this is the MCA’s board meeting, they don’t have to change how they run their meeting to accommodate you, madam! Sit down and shut up. I hope she tries that at a committee meeting at the General Assembly. I’ll be sure to have some popcorn ready as I sit back and enjoy the show.
All the antis rude shenanigans always make me all the more proud of the decorum of VCDL members.
THE NEXT STEP
Reading faces, it was pretty clear to many of us that the MCA really didn’t want anything to do with the whole affair. I believe that they do want to placate the fearsome parents, so they created an ad-hoc committee to look into what, if anything, the MCA should do. The committee will report back next month.
We’ll be watching and waiting.
Thanks to all of you who came out, create that sea of orange and standing up for freedom!
Photos of the meeting are now posted on the home page of the VCDL web site.

3. ACTION ITEM! Gabby Giffords to spend $600,000 to take over Virginia Senate (Dick Black is in her crosshairs)! Election day is in less than a month - early "in person" voting has started!
**************************************************************
As a gun owners, you absolutely MUST vote this November 3rd. If the State Senate, which is hanging by a thread, goes back into the control of the gun-hating Senate Democrat leadership, it is not going to be good for us. Anti-gun Gabby Giffords is about to spend $600,000 to turn the Virginia Senate over to the Democrats (https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/vi ... story.html).
The anti-gun money dump is going to:
* Democrat Jill McCabe to try to defeat pro-gun Republican Senator Dick Black in Virginia’s 13th Senate District (McCabe did not return her survey, while Dick Black has a VCDL-PAC endorsement)
* Democrat Jeremy McPike who is opposing Republican Hal Parish in Virginia’s 29th Senate District (neither have returned VCDL’s survey)
* Democrat Daniel A. Gecker (who has taken a strong anti-gun position) who is opposing Carl R. Loser (VCDL-PAC endorsed), Glen Sturtevant (not returned his VCDL survey), and Marlene K. Durfee (not returned her VCDL survey) in Virginia’s 10th Senate District.
If you fall into one of these categories, you should vote early to make sure your ever-so-important vote counts:
* You work outside the city you live in
* You work long hours
* You have an illness that would make voting on election day hard or impossible
* You are pregnant
* Or you will be out of town on election day**
**Correction: Also, you don’t need any specific reason to vote early. If you MIGHT be out of town on election day, that’s sufficient.

5. The Party of Gun Control is pushing a gun-control package in Congress
**************************************************************
Like all threats to our gun rights, VCDL is taking this seriously. Universal Background Checks, unending waits for background checks, and more people disqualified from gun ownership, are all part of the anti-gun Democratic leadership’s plans for Congress.
VCDL is part of a coalition of other grassroots gun-groups across the nation who will be active in fighting the threat. I will advise you for any actions deemed necessary as, or if, they come up.

Senate Democrats Are Preparing a Legislative Package on Gun Control — Here’s a Preview of What’s Coming
Oct. 8, 2015 8:51am Jon Street
WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Democrats are preparing a legislative push to curb guns, a week after a mass shooting at an Oregon community college refocused attention on the nation’s toll of firearms deaths.
Republicans controlling Congress have shown scant interest in restricting guns and the Democratic effort has little chance of success. But their drive could keep the issue alive during next year’s elections, driving up support from sympathetic voters and contributors while complicating GOP senators’ re-election campaigns in some closely divided states.
In a letter to fellow Democrats, Sens. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., wrote that their effort “will be a rallying point for a public that is eager for congressional action and will be the basis for future legislation that we will demand” receives a Senate vote.
Democrats would use procedural delays to thwart legislation if Republicans refuse to allow votes on the gun proposals, a Democratic aide said Wednesday who wasn’t authorized to discuss the plans publicly and requested anonymity. Schumer and Stabenow are leaders of Senate Democrats’ messaging efforts.
Democrats said their effort would include broadening federal background checks, now required only for sales by federally licensed firearms dealers, to cover all purchases at gun shows and online. A bipartisan version of that plan, opposed by the National Rifle Association, was blocked in 2013 by Republicans and a few Democrats, months after the fatal shooting of 20 students and six staffers at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
They said they would propose making it harder for people to buy guns if their background check is not completed.
Currently, if a background check is still not complete after three days – often because the FBI is awaiting information from local law enforcement agencies – the sale is allowed. Democrats said they would extend that period but hadn’t decided yet for how long.
They also said they would seek to add all domestic abusers to the list of those prohibited from purchasing firearms, and make it a federal offense to be a straw purchaser, or someone who buys a firearm for somebody else.
Today, people subject to court restraining orders or convicted of domestic violence may not purchase firearms. But there are loopholes, such as for abusive dating partners.
A gunman killed nine people last week at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. Authorities said Wednesday that the shooter, Christopher Harper-Mercer, killed himself in a room where many of his victims lay after he was wounded by plainclothes detectives.
President Barack Obama plans to travel to Roseburg on Friday to meet victims’ families. As he has after several mass shootings, he has called on Congress to strengthen gun restrictions but expressed frustration with lawmakers’ inaction.
Democrats fell five votes short of moving their background check expansion through the Senate two years ago. Thanks to retirements and losses in the 2014 elections, they now are probably 11 votes shy of the support they’d need to succeed.
Republicans running the House have shown no interest in even permitting votes on the issue.

A little fact-checking on Obama’s claims that states with more gun control have less “gun violence.”
If you include suicides and accidents under the category of “violence,” as the President does, then Virginia, Maryland, and DC are neck-and-neck.
If you look at true murders, then Obama’s claims are clearly false:

McAuliffe, Herring seek gun laws to protect domestic victims
By STEVE SZKOTAK - Associated Press
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe and Attorney General Mark R. Herring challenged the General Assembly on Wednesday to approve legislation to keep firearms out of the hands of people who have committed domestic violence.
The two Democrats spoke at a news conference where a study was released showing that of the 109 family and “intimate partner” homicides in Virginia in 2014, 64 were committed with a firearm. The report by the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence was released ahead of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, October.
The authors of the study wrote that “Virginia’s legislators have done next to nothing to prevent run-related tragedies in the home.” They added, “It is still far too easy for domestic abusers to purchase and possess firearms, often illegally.”
The advocacy group proposed a series of proposals to close what it called the state’s “lethal loopholes,” all of which have previously failed in the General Assembly.
“If these laws were passed,” McAuliffe said, “they would have a far-reaching effect on protecting our loved ones from harm. “Unfortunately, our state legislators have heard most of these proposals before and they have done absolutely nothing to turn these common-sense ideas into law.”
Among the bills proposed by the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence, and endorsed by Herring and McAuliffe, are measures that would prohibit someone who is named in a protective order from possessing firearms and prohibit someone convicted of certain misdemeanors – such as stalking – from purchasing or possessing a firearm for at least five years.
Herring and McAuliffe clearly put the onus on the General Assembly to act.
“This question is a very simple one: Do you stand with the victims of domestic violence or do you stand with their abusers?” Herring asked. “Once again legislators will have a chance to show who they stand with.”
McAuliffe acknowledged the odds are stacked against them in the General Assembly.
“You don’t give up,” he said of the renewed push. “Domestic abusers should not own firearms. That, to me, is basic common sense.”
Rep. Todd Gilbert, a Shenandoah County Republican who voted against some of the proposed legislation, said nothing had changed his mind on the domestic violence gun legislation. He stated in an interview, as McAuliffe had noted, that many of the provisions are already covered by federal law.
“This is a very emotional tactic that is nothing more than the new front on which to fight for the anti-gun left,” he said. “I don’t believe you stop bad people from hurting other people by passing another law.”
