I wish police would prosecute people for filing a false police report / complaint. Put these jerks in jail. Set the example that they will be punish for putting police and innocent citizens in danger.

Most of the cops I have run in to are heavily pro 2A. They also know that if someone is carrying a rig openly that they are 99% most likely not a criminal.

Cry wolf. Too much of this stuff and when someone really is acting dangerous with the firearm, the police won't bother.

This is very important and true. As much as some people are afraid of guns they need to be educated on the facts. I don't think too many criminals open carry.

In the past, I have known a lot of convicted felons, some of whom were known to possess firearms on occasion (and, when I say past, I mean distant past ).

Not a one of them would consider the open carry of firearms. They weren't always the brightest bulbs on the tree, but they weren't riding the short bus, either. They weren't about to put their criminal behavior on public display and risk bumping into the officer that arrested them last month.

As such, my general assumption, when I see a guy openly carrying while tending to normal, daily business is that he is a law abiding citizen.

If you SWAT someone, you should be held not just for filing a false police report, but attempted murder. Period.

That's basically what it is, isn't it? Unless of course, someone dies... then it would be murder.

It isn't QUITE an attempt to murder, I don't think. But it is certainly conduct that is wrongful and reckless or wanton, and likely to produce death or grievous bodily harm to another person. That is the definition of reckless endangerment. In at least some jurisdictions there is a separate offense called "public endangerment", where the same type of conduct creates the same risk to the public at large, and I'd argue these cretins would also be guilty of that.

Sadly, in VA we've already seen this with at least one fatality in a Walmart - the victim was carrying an air-soft rifle that he found un-boxed in the store. If the Police won't press charges, the SWATting victim can. And this has happened a couple of times in VA also.

In related news - CSGV is urging folks to pepper spray OCers. Head on a swivel!

If they try to pepper spray me they had better hit me in the eyes because I can see them and I'm carrying I may not shoot them but I will rearrange their face. Just like a car if someone hits me they had better kill me, if I have an ounce of life left I'll use it to personally escort them off this mortal coil.

I'm with you on that one bro. I had a hobo in DC start some crap with me. He said he was gonna kick my rear. I said "You ever get punched in the face by a PO'ed 400lb man?"

Besides that, I think it work work out more so in our favor if we don't shoot them. Most people that do that crap can't fight and a cowards. One good pop and they'll be on the ground crying until the cops show up... Then crying all the way to jail for assault.

In general I'm willing to OC out in the quiet, rural world; but around crowds of people I will conceal mainly because it is more convenient... either just slip in a pocket holster or I just prefer to blend in.

Don't see many OC'ers around my area, but occasionaly, and have no real beef with them. However, I tend to agree with this article here that most of them seem a bit oblivious to their surroundings, and seem to use crummy holsters dangling off inadequate belts. For some reason, the CC'ers seem to put the effort in to get decent gear. I'm sure there are exceptions, but that has been my observations.

One of the last OC'ers that I have encountered, seemed to have used the progressive stereotype of "gun owner compensating for something" as a checklist! He had a full-sized pistol with a massive flared magwell, sporting magazines with extended base plates; all carried in some monstrosity of a holster (it almost looked like some drop holster worn up on a belt!) that appeared to be holster combined together with spare magazines holders!? The pistol looked like something you would see on a USPSA line, but the holster rig.... uhmm... magazines in front of the gun... both on the strong side? Anyway, along with his dress he came across as some bizarre caricature...

Oh.. and the phrase that annoys me is "packing heat". No one uses it but old Hollywood movies, and "journalists".

I love to OC... but that article sums up my feeling with this...

If I am in the great outdoors where I am not likely to run into many people, I’m more comfortable with open carrying than I would otherwise be.

If I am in a typical suburban or urban crowd of any kind, I would prefer to carry concealed. Human beings cannot have situational awareness 100% of the time in 360 degrees. You will not see everyone, 100% of the time. It simply isn’t possible. You are human, and you have many other things on your mind in the course of an average day.

Down in our neck of the woods, folks just say they are "packin'". I've heard some of the old-timers(my Pappy included) say they were "heeled". I always knew what they meant, but had never considered the origin of that usage until this post motivated me to look it up. What I found was very interesting, and made a lot more sense than I assumed it would:

Funny. There is one guy in particular that I see in the Woodbridge area often that is OCing. It is always in a ragged drop leg holster flopping around as he walks. I mean it looks like it is going to fall off. I just shake my head and go on 'bout my business.
