Do you know anyone who wants a cat?

I wish I could figure out how to make this firearm related - perhaps those of us in the 2A community are just kinder and more giving than those who won't stand up for themselves.

A beautiful, sweet-tempered, starving cat with long gray hair has been on my block for the past month or so. He's been sleeping under my car in the driveway. Yesterday he found the courage to come up on our front porch, gently laid a paw on my leg, and looked up. Of course we fed him, brushed him clean, and will nurse him back to health. But we can't keep him, with two dogs who don't love cats, and a cat who can't stand other cats, already in the house.

We named him Marvin (see South Park). He's really just long gray hair and bones - probably didn't have more than a few days let to live. But he's friendly, quiet, and well-mannered. He has a big head and handsome features. He has a plastic collar on - looks like he was a house cat, abandoned by a family some time ago.

We're in Elkton. If you are anywhere nearby, please ask around. We'd really like to find him a good home as he deserves.

Awww. Sounds like a sweet cat. While I tend to get along with other people's cats okay, I can't live with them. Especially male cats.

I hope you find someone that can care for him. Sounds like he'll make a great companion for someone.

Sounds like an awesome little critter. We already have a dog, a rabbit, and a small litter of felines or I would take him myself. Worse case... there are many very good "no-kill" shelters out there that may have way better luck getting him a home. Though, I'm not a fan of putting animals in cages, but since it would only be a temp home till he's adopted, it may be better in the long-run.

Sure we could take him to the shelter, but I want to try the network first. At the very least the adopter can avoid fees and paperwork. And our community works without relying on "the system" - or should, at least.

I know this is a long shot, and he may end up at the shelter. And I would be surprised if a member here can take him. But if you could ask around, and broaden this network, that would be very helpful.

Pic attached.

I'd come and get him except for two things:
1. It would be a two hour round trip to get to you from Charlottesville. So if you find someone closer I wouldn't be too upset.
2. I'd have to clear it with my daughter, who I live with, we've already got 2 rabbits and 2 cats but the rabbits are bigger than the cats and ignore them and I know the cats will, at least, tolerate another cat. We've had two different males sharing the house with these two over the last couple of years.

I just sent a link to this thread to my daughter (upstairs).
We'll see what she decides.

Alan, I can bring him to you. Let me know how your family conference works out.

Not a cat person. Allergic to them. But I applaud your effort and wish you luck. Abandoning a domestic pet to go feral is as much a disservice to the community as it is to the animal.

Well, I'm afraid I've got bad news.
The consensus of the other two humans living in the house is that three cats is one too many.
So I'm going to have to bow out.
I'm truly sorry that I can't help you however this isn't my house so I have to live by the rules set by others to keep the peace.

I certainly hope you find someone to adopt him.
If he was comfortable enough to come up to you and touch you he is obviously well socialized and will make someone an excellent companion animal.

A feral cat or one that's been out on his own for a long time wouldn't do that.
Probably the reason he's starved is because he was raised as an indoor cat and his mother was also an indoor cat. That means he was never taught to hunt and has absolutely no idea what food on the hoof looks like.
Kittens have to be taught that mice, moles, and other small animals are food and how to catch and kill them by their mother or they will not survive outside.

Alan, thank you for the effort.

Marvin is still available. Please ask around your networks. I put up a short video and some photos here:

No. There are undocumented Democrat voters (i.e., illegals) in this valley who fight dogs; they use cats to train the dogs to kill. Where do they find the cats? Cracklist.

No thanks, no how.

Looks like the Rockingham/Harrisonburg SPCA is the closest shelter to you.
Also you might want to notify their lost & found page: http://www.rhspca.org/lost.html

EDIT: OOPS! Maybe not, Check this list: http://animal-shelters.find-near-me.info/in/elkton-va

The Harrisonburg SPCA is my last resort. I'd really like to see the private network succeed. As said above, I know it's a long shot that any member here would want him. The question to ask your friends is "Do you know anyone who wants to get a cat?" and if the answer is No, follow up with, "Could you ask the people you know if they know someone?"

LOL. Smokey is actually a pretty cool cat. Scott's just a little grumpy tonight.

Bob, don't forget Caring for Creatures out near Lake Monticello for your last resort over the SPCA. They are a no-kill shelter and will keep Marvin until he finds a new home or reaches the end of his days on his own terms, not because they needed room.

SI, thanks. I didn't think CFC would take an animal from another county. They sure are good people. I'll call them on Tuesday.

Cat's Cradle in Harrisonburg listed him on their Petfinder page. They said long-haired cats are popular, so we'll give that a few days to work.

After a week of good meals and daily brushing, Marvin is starting to look pretty good. His energy level is returning and he is even cruising the neighborhood within a block or so. He's as quiet, gentle and affectionate as ever. Meeting the dogs didn't faze him a bit.

Nonetheless, we are not the right home for him, so I'd appreciate your continued efforts to ask around your networks.
