I wonder if the American Football (as opposed to soccer) term "punt" comes from this gun's name.
Fire the damn thing at a flock of birds and hope you hit a few.

My Grandfather had a punt gun...I think it was a 4 gauge.He was a waterfowl hunter on The Eastern Shore.. I never got to shoot it or never even got to see him shoot it. I do remember the shell was the size of a beer can .

At the time those guns were in use they were fired at birds sitting grouped together. Yeah, they hit a few.
And the gun takes its name from the boat it was used on.

If you ever read James Michener's "Chesapeake", it describes this gun in pretty good detail. Great read, BTW.
