Where to Shoot Around Richmond?

I'm certainly aware of Dominion Shooting Range and even Old Forge Sporting Clays in New Kent. I am not aware of any other public range in the area. I have heard there are some private shooting clubs around, but my leads dead ended. Any other options around for pistol or rifle in the Richmond area?

There's Black Creek in eastern Hanover. I used to shoot there about 30 years ago when KC (the owner) didn't charge a dime. Or if you are looking for something informal and depending on the distance you want to shoot, I have a small back yard set up about an hour or so from Brandermill. And I don't charge.

Thanks for the very kind offer, Vanhunter. I'd use my own back yard, but I'm sure the City of Richmond would take a dim view of it. Sounds like we're closer to 1 1/2 hours apart, but you never know.

Black Creek was one I had heard about, but couldn't get anyone to answer the contact number I had. Maybe someone has current contact info.

A little digging turned up a list complied by NRA. There's even a number for Black Creek, but it may be the one I tried before.

Here's the link.

Not much available on Southside, even then most are Private and since I'm within the town limit my backyard has to remain lead free

Black Creek is a pretty good place to shoot. Limited membership and you have to get there Feb 1 and take a safety course. He has a few spots open at that time. Only draw back for me is 100 yd max range. I'm looking for a little father

They used to have a public rifle range at Amelia WMA, but I haven't been out there in awhile.

I've heard there is a range at FT Lee that is open to the public and also free, but I haven't checked it out yet.

I shoot at the house.

Amelia WMA range is closed through the summer. I think all DGIF ranges are. The closed dates are like from 1 March to 1 September, check their website to verify the dates. Makes a lot of sense to be open during hunting season, that's the perfect time to zero your rifle and take a few practice shots- who in their right mind would even consider doing that during the off season?

That being said, I have used those ranges when they were "closed." If there isn't a legible sign you can't be expected to look it up on the internet can you?

Just found out that the Ft. Lee Personally Owned Weapons Range is open to the public. They have a web page at: http://leemwr.com/Rec/rec_odr_pow.htm

The cost is $5.00 for the 1st hour, $2.50 for each half hour after that. They have targets available, but you must bring your own hearing/sight protection and ammo.

They are only open Sundays and Wednesday afternoon/evenings.

The web page has contact phoine numbers.

I'm gonna check it out this Sunday.

ah, yep. More about the Ft. Lee POW Range here:

I'll probably take a ride down there to check them out later this summer or early autumn.

Highly reccommend the Fort Lee POW range. Super nice facility and very friendly but safety minded staff. Hopefully they stay open forever.

Also reccommend Smoking Gun. Great people but its a small place so watch out for the Petersburg locals who barely know how to safely handle a firearm much less how to shoot it.

Dominion not so much, its like a cave in there and being forced to buy their overpriced ammo sucks. Friendly folks though.
