Washington’s phony math

Washington’s phony math is saying that the unemployment statistics is 5.4%, now let’s add this up.
93 million are out of the labor force
57 million of women are out of the labor force
46 million are on food Stamps / Welfare
50 million are in poverty
With these numbers, realistically the unemployment figures should be 45%, this BS figure of 5.4% coming out of Washington is just a distraction to not allow the American public to not see how bad Obama has done as the president.

Eh, its not really phony math. Its more of "the masses are uneducated" and don't know what the unemployment rate is.

The Unemployment Rate is the partially reported rate at which people are losing their jobs, but are trying to stay in the job market. The number is only counting people who lost their job to reasons not related to their own actions, they didn't move into retirement after losing their jobs, and have filed their very first "unemployment" claim. And only their initial claim.


Now, the real number is the labor participation rate. How many people are of working age compared to how many are actually working.

But even that number is BS, because so few people that work actually make enough to pay taxes, that their participation almost doesn't count.

Don't think that's exactly right. It is the people who have become unemployed, are (at least allegedly) actively seeking employment, and whose unemployment benefits haven't run out yet. So it is an accumulation of firings/quits over the period of time benefits are available rather than a pure percentage rate at a point in time. Now, if you add to the official "unemployment rate" the reciprocal of the labor force participation rate, you'd have the percentage of the people who aren't employed, but it seems to me that would include those who are retired, underage, disabled, etc. Plenty of opportunities to obfuscate here; and the gummint takes full advantage of them.

Reminds me of that story about the redneck who went to Harvard on a scholarship:

Dormin. That is a great joke!

But... the unemployment rate is only first-time filers. Meaning, only the very first submittal counts. It doesn't count everyone collecting for the duration they are collecting.

If 200,000 people lost their job today and all file for benefits, those numbers count. If those people are still collecting the next month, but by some miracle of God, no one losses their job, that month the unemployment rate would be zero (0), even though people are collecting.
