I'm a long time VA resident and just got my CC permit last month. I don't carry often, but that could change.

I have a question regarding transporting a loaded weapon in my car. If you have a valid CC permit, are there any restrictions on where your LOADED gun can be while driving in Virginia? For example, can you keep it in your jacket pocket? Can you keep it holstered to the base of your steering column? Can you keep it between your seat and the console?

I realize you don't want to have it in the same location as your license & registration (and CC permit)... i.e., a glove compartment or console, if that's where you have to retrieve your license from.

I'm not asking so much what's advisable (everyone has their own opinion), as I am, what's LEGAL in VA for CC permit holders.

Congrats on the new Virginia CHP, and welcome to VGOF!

You can keep your loaded handgun on your person, in the glovebox, console or under the seat. They also make holsters specifically designed to mount in the car for quick access while driving.

It's all good.

Just in case you have to leave your gun in your vehicle unattended.

When you have a CHP, there are no restrictions on where you stow your weapon (if not on your person).

FWIW, (and for general knowledge) this part is particularly important for those of us without a CCW:

As of July 1, 2010, a concealed handgun permit is not necessary when carrying a handgun while in a personal, private motor vehicle or vessel and such handgun is secured in a container or compartment in the vehicle or vessel. The term “secured” as used does not require the compartment to be locked. OAG opinion 11-111.

According to the Attorney General, it is perfectly legal for a non-CCW resident to carry a loaded firearm in their glovebox or center console and NOT have it locked.
