Evil does not exist

Of course, people still commit innumerable bad actions, but the idea that people make conscious decisions to hurt or harm is no longer sustainable, say the new brain scientists. For one thing, there is no such thing as "free will" with which to decide to commit evil. (Like evil, free will is an antiquated concept for most.) Autonomous, conscious decision-making itself may well be an illusion. And thus intentional evil is impossible.
Emphasis mine.
Any decision we make is already pre-determined by chemicals in the brain, huh? Odd... seeing as I can't even decide what to choose of the menu half the time. Now the claim is evil people aren't responsible?
Of course, the source is Slate, favorite of "it's no one's fault but people who aren't as progressive as us!"

Tell that to the Jews who survived Hitler, the Cambodians who survived Pol Pot, the Christians who manage to escape the Muslims, etc., etc., etc.

That's a crock. It's kind of like atheist Calvinism.

I'd like to meet that "scientist" on the street. Maybe I'm pre-ordained to hand out an ass whoopin? And then in court, simply say "But your Honor, according to the *victim*, this was bound to happen, so I can't be held liable" while handing over his "research" as Exhibit A...

Well, to be honest, if it weren't for firearms? I would probably be a HORRIBLE person. Because I like them so much, enjoy the hobby, and congregate with fine upstanding folk, the motivation to commit felonies is repressed, so that I may continue.
Because otherwise? I would be be in a fight every day, punching out stupid people, who should not breed.

Well in reality it's all one big grey area. Absolutes of course do not exist, any scientist worth their salt will tell you that. Of course we as human beings are unique in seeing the world in good or bad, when really we are merely subjects to the choices we make and influenced by those around us. We are who we are because of a series of events and influences that led to the way each us think, bar none. Some take to those of majorities thoughts and rules while others instead turn against them, and again this isn't an all or nothing situation but on a case by case basis. Which would explain why there are so many types of people and ways of thinking, whether that is right or wrong is meaningless and determined only by the ruling majority.
Now if you want to get spiritual or philosophical well we are only human. and humans are only animals after all. Even though some of us would like think themselves gods when they aren't even close and never will be. I feel we could be summed up into two groups those who set the fires and those who put them out.

To say that absolutes don't exist, is an absolutist statement.

Because the writer is agnostic he cannot accept the concept of "Evil". That's OK, but is he so dumb (ignorant?) that he cannot substitute "Bad" for that word that his beliefs won't allow?

I guess they don't count the monsters at Planned Parenthood that hack up aborted babies to sell their "tissue".
