The phone rang a few minutes ago and I answered it. Usually I don't, if I don't know the number on the caller ID, but I was supposed to get a call from corporate HR today concerning my retirement, so I picked it up.
What I got was a recording that started off with,
"This is the last attempt to notify you of an impending lawsuit being brought against you by the IRS. You must call the following number immediately, ....."
At that point, I hung up. I've gotten the phone number of the local IRS office in Richmond, Va and will call tomorrow. To find out if the call is real (and hopefully why???) or to let them know that someone is attempting to screw people over.
We'll see, tomorrow.
Now I need to call the IRS

Re: Now I need to call the IRS
The IRS usually contacts by mail , not by phone. They start out with a short , brief letter with a # to call at a certain time. Anyways...Good Luck !

I'm no tax lawyer, but that sounds like an identity fraud case in the works. Likely its a scam. I got the same call. So did my mother in-law and my 16 year old son who never earned a penny.
Don't call. If you don't get official paper correspondence or a visit by an IRS field agent with proper veritable I'd, I wouldn't waste time even thinking about it.

99.% certainty that it is a scam. Read this link and other things you can find on the FTC web site on scams and consumer protection. You can also report suspected scams to the FTC.

The IRS always mails taxpayers on tax issues.

Re: Now I need to call the IRS
Thanks for the info.
I tried to call the Richmond IRS office this morning. I got a recording saying they don't answer that number or give out help by phone and suggested I go online to the IRS website (where I got the phone number) to get more info.
So I did. The IRS website has a short video about the recent rash of fraud/fake calls. It suggests that you report the call/e-mail to the tigba website and even has a link to it. So I went to the tigba website and the link there takes me right back to the IRS website.
There is also an e-mail address that you can send a note to about such calls but when I tried, I got a message telling me there was no such e-mail address.
I drove up to Richmond to the IRS Office Bldg. (had to go up on Midlothian Tpk. anyway to get records of the cats' rabies shots. I got to the location, the GPS route guidance notified me I was at the location (out in the street in front of the building) and then shut off. I made three trips around/up/down streets trying to find a park spot (its on N. 8th St.) and never found an empty parking spot and got so turned around I might not have found the building after finding a parking spot, so I just headed home to mow the grass.
Again, thanks for the info about the calls and the usual IRS methods of contact.
