Yeah, I find it someone interesting that I could obtain both my CHP (with a 20 minute video and ten question test) and my hunting license (actually covers more useful information) without ever having to have held a gun in my hands. I used my VA hunting certification to get my NC hunting license (which normally requires you to demonstrate you can fire a firearm without injuring yourself).

Of course, I liken this to getting a motorcycle license. Sure you can technically get your license without taking a basic riding course, but you're a fool if you don't. Still, I'm not in any big favor for additional government hoops just for show.

As alluded to in the post above, it's much ado about nothing. While many people may apply for their permits with the perfunctory safety training. Most get some instruction of some sort when they actually think about carrying (or have already received it). I'd certainly not want to wait until I needed to defend myself to fire my weapon for the first time.

Of course... everyone I know who has a CHP has owned and used firearms for years prior and the "training" is a paper exercise. And for those who haven't, the training to to help get newbs acquainted with general firearms parts and safety (aka whats the dangerous end). Nothing more.

I wouldn't say that is universal. I've been in gun shops a few times where people have shown up (in many cases women) with permit in hand ready to buy their first gun and I got the feeling that they've never had any real experience with them.

Reckon they boil a few peanuts down in Southside Virginia, too. Not my favorite way to eat peanuts, but to each his own. NC barbecue is right tasty. Not as good as #1 son's, but right tasty. Every time we go to Raleigh, SWMBO makes me stop at Aunt Bea's at Mt. Pilot, NC (exit 134 on route 52) and buy 4 pounds of barbecued pork to take to the daughter's house.

I used to smoke a few pork shoulders for my Memorial day party but more people kept showing up and I'd run out of meat so now I just do the whole pig. I'm pretty good on my sauces for the lexington-style dip I gave up and just pick up a pint at LST. My NC-native friends say it's unfair that a YANKEE can make good barbeque (of course, only those guys would refer to someone born in Maryland and has lived half his life in Virginia as a Yankee).


As for peanuts, roasted and salted is the preferred way though I've had some deep fried that are excellent. I've tried doing the latter myself, but it didn't quite come out right. Boiled peanuts are mushy abominations.

My mother used to deep fry peanuts and they were delicious.
Never had them anywhere else.
They were very crunchy.
